Thanks for the replies. Quentin Greban's work is great but I don't see a lot of stylistic touchstones. I'm trying to get more and more texture in my stuff. The next piece has some additional digital techniques that have that analog feel that seems to be necessary to get published.

Well, I make some quick different shadow sketches, decide on a light direction that works for me and start painting, adjusting and checking my values all the time. The grid effect on the crocodragon's belly took a while to paint, 2-3 hours, because I was looking for a cool motive and redid it a couple of times. I had to mess around with the values on the dragon's right hand because the hookah was very close in value to the hand. I darkened the hand a lot to make sure I got a decent read.
