Is Drawing Board slowly dying?

Postby brandonstarr » Mon Aug 30, 2010 4:44 pm

Does anyone know what's going on with the forums? Why can't anyone upload new art? seems strange that this hasn't been addressed or maybe it has and I can't find the answer.
Thanks in advance.

I've also been wondering about this. I kept searching the board for topics pertaining to upload issues, and was surprised to not to find any. I decided it must be me somehow, until I saw this post.

what's going on!?

If I had to guess, I would say it's that this board isn't very noob-friendly. Not that people are actively disdainful, but there's a high ration of pro/near-pro artists on here, which is a little intimidating.

And the pros have work to do, so anything for here is extra.

Maybe people are just getting their art from blogs instead of boards these days.
They say you should never hit a man with a closed fist, but it is, on occasion, hilarious.

Good questions, guys: what is going on?

I have to say I'm not totally surprised, though. When I joined the board I had the feeling that it used to be something different. I'm not sure but I think this used to be a place where pro's and beginners were showing each other their stuff and hoping to get some helpfull feedback. These days there is a lot of stuff posted that is just done in a hurry. People don't always seem to put serious work in the stuff they post here.

Because of this old board members move away, mostley pro's. This is a shame but I'm pretty sure that other pro's will come back to fill their places. Maybe the people behind the drawingboard hope that by making it harder to post work there will be less sloppy artwork.

You can still post work if you use photobucket, just upload it there and copy-paste the img code.

I sure hope the board isn't dying but as long we keep posting stuff it's still alive, right?

Did someone not pay their server bills?

Yea, I thought it was strange that the same several uploads were on the front page day after day, and I couldn't access my own uploads. Thought it might just be me, but I'm glad (or maybe not) to see that there are others experiencing the same thing.

Anyone know the username of the guy that runs the forums? I know I've seen him post before, during a donation drive. Maybe if he gets a PM he could check out what's wrong... that is assuming PMs still work.

What's strange for me is that on the home page it shows the same images. They haven't changed in days. I've cleared my cache and they're the same thumbnails. I even tried a different browser. One of the images on the home page is from 2003!

What's going on?

I'm taking a shot in the dark here but Rob, who owns the forums, is a one man operation and also maintains other folks websites (like mine) in additon to whatever he does for a day job.

Since he doesn't get paid to maintain these boards (unless we donate to him) I'd cut him some slack on icons not updating and the inability to upload.

There are plenty of free sites out there (e.g. Photobucket) that are easy to use to add links to your posts for images.

What about one we want to find and delete? Are they still there? How do I find them to remove them if I want?

But that's not even the main issue. I - and it appears most people posting here - are just asking for some explanation. This is outta the blue with no reason given as to why or what is going on.

I know there are other alternatives to uploading, but it was so much easier just to do it along with your post. On top of that, there's a lot of artwork with some degree of nudity, which photobucket won't allow, so some artwork just can't be shown here for free. Honestly, I think it's hurting this board quite a bit. I haven't uploaded anything, or made any posts (other than this thread) because I don't want to bother with it. Yes, I'm lazy, it's my loss, but I think there's a good chance that I'm not the only one. I check the board every once in a while, but I don't spend as much time as I used to.

and yes, the main issue is I would at least like to know what is going on. Is it just no longer being maintained? Is the site going down soon? Are uploads ever going to come back, and if not, there should probably be a message/sticky telling people which websites to use to upload and link photos.

Yes, a general announcement sticky/note of some kind would be appreciated.
Now, so many of the features have been disabled, one can't help but feel that the ship is sinking.

Yeah, this board seems to be dying a slow death and that's really unfortunate. I noticed the degression a few years back when people stopped responding to really amazing pieces of art. But even more noticeable signs are on the Movie/TV and Music forums. People were posting and responding about movies at a break-neck speed a few years back (just look at the archives from 2 years ago). And now if some one posts ANYthing in that forum, it remains as the last post for a week or so. And I was turned on to a lot of brand new music via the Music forum. Now we just post old youtube videos.

I initially wrote off the lack of participation on this board to the shitty economy. I figured the time people had to post art and critique others' art is now going towards hustling to survive. Not as much "frivilous" time anymore.

Whatever the reason is, it's sad to see this place fade away. This was the perfect illustration/animation/comics/movie community and it surprises me that so many people don't really find it necessary to have one.
