Sucker Punch - Final version (New update p3)

Postby jakob westman » Mon Aug 02, 2010 12:11 am

I got a request from fellow Drawingboard member Rico to do a sketch of Batgirl. I initially had some trouble coming up with something that worked with Batgirl, but then tried using Barbara instead and things suddenly went much easier.

Oh, and the original inks were really small (apprx 6" high), that's why the lines are a bit wobbly.

I wonder if I should add tones to her skin too, or if it's good just as it is.
Let me know what you think!

/ Jakob

PS. Does anyone know why some thumbnails on the startpage look so wierd? The colors are way off.

I'm loving his Jakob! And being a HUGE Batgirl fan isn't the reason :)

Thanks guys. Glad you liked it.
Here's a little step-by-step I made.

When I did this piece, like I said above, I started out thinking I'd do Batgirl on her motorcycle but I couldn't quite get her to look right. And when I blacked out her costume (not shown) the foreshortenings and overlaps made it look really bad.

So I dug out an old magazine cover that I love with Fran?oise Hardy, where she's standing in a bike jacket, with a helmet under her arm. I thought it would make a nice image with Barbara instead of Batgirl, and it still kept the bike imagery in there.

Made a real quick sketch with pen to see what it'd look like with a lot of solid blacks. Looked pretty decent and felt worth giving a shot.

Next I did a tighter pencil version of the pose, also tried to make it less static and gave Barbary some hips (or at least, a hint of hips). I took a photo of pencils with my phone. The next day I took the photo and tried to rotate and straighten it out in Photoshop. Of course I should've scanned the pencils, but I was just too lazy to do it. I then added colors and worked on the layout/graphics.

After having worked on the layout a bit I did new tighter pencils (not shown here) on the lightbox and inked and scanned them.

After that I spent a while on tweaking the colors and the background,
and that's pretty much it.

Thanks for the comments guys!

I actually went back and spent some more time on the initial, abandoned sketch (see above) and managed to go over it a few times more til it started to look ok.

Her mouth and legs were probably the hardest parts.
I think I drew a zillion different mouths for her.

Let me know what you think!

PS. The pose was based on this gorgeous photo by Akif Celebi.

Hey Jakob, I love the second one! I probably prefer it because the pose is more dynamic; the pose makes a good contrast with your dead-weight inks. Although I also like the first version I think it is staged a bit too static which makes it feel a bit flat.

The process post is great and I have to say that the sketch of the second version is my favourite drawing in this thread. Your inks are awesome but you do seem to lose quite some dynamics from the sketch. (this comes from a guy who is always struggling with dynamic inking and staging btw)

I'm glad you decided to finsih the original sketch!
