Character shape design

Postby Loading » Sat Feb 20, 2010 5:02 pm

Hello folks

Over at Deviant Art there's a great group called Design A Character http://design-a-character.deviantart.com/ which is ran by a nice lad called Luigi. Every week he posts up some random shapes and all the members draw some faces from them, then you pick one and do a turnaround or design

Anyhow, this is my entry this week. The whole thing has turned out to be a great exercise for me, breaking down those line boundries that were starting to creep up, if anyone is interested then I would sign up

Comments and crits are of course welcome

Thanks guys

this looks great. Some really solid choices
I am no fan of turn arounds as they are boring, maybe you could draw this character
in some poses that are of interest... I understand that turn arounds are the thing that
people do but I find them rubbish.

Good look

Cordsy: Thanks man, yeah its a cool idea, get over and join in

Mark: Thanks so much, you should order a new one from Wacom!

Mick: Cheers fella.

I know what you mean about turanrounds, the good thing is that the rules are flexible so you can pretty much do whatever you like. With this little guy I would like to do a few more takes on him

Here is this weeks shapes from the Character design challenge.

I thought I'd go for a cheesy rock band theme this week.

I love that rock band one. Though, I think the sketches are better than the clean up with the exception of the first character on the left.

Yeah I may have lost some of the energy from the sketches, I'll try to claw it back on the full bodies

Thanks for the honesty

the character shapes are really fun! It would be interesting to see if you did full bodies for them

I wouldn't say it's the energy so much as the expressive quality.

And that's not to say that the clean ups are bad, just not as good as.

The first one looks a lot like Dirk the Daring from Dragon's Lair ^_^

I really love the odd shapes. Though I agree the inks are a bit less, the end result is still awesome.

Quake: Many thanks for the response, I'll try to sort that out!

This isn't for the character design challenge, but I thought I'd keep all my stuff together anyhow.

This chap is for college, hopefully he'll fit the bill but time will tell. I've been trying to improve my linework as per some good suggestions, still a bit iffy but perhaps I'm on the right tracks
