Over the weekend I saw the trailer once again at the theater and I was not impressed.

It simply looks like a generic disney film. I bet many here can already guess what type of characters are in the film, when the songs will be played, etc.

Strictly a formula film.

Just saw a screening. I won't give up anything at all just wanted to say, it was a very good film. It was nice to see traditional animation on the big screen.

The audience, which was a mix of press, adults, kids and randomly selected people as well, laughed at all the jokes and clapped for several scenes.

I have some things that I could/will critique but only after the official release, so that I can discuss it among you all.

jmad72, where does it rank in the cannon of 2D animated Disney films? Good enough to revive the medium?

Hey, gau dog -

I think it is good enough. If Tarzan was the "last" best thing out of Disney Animation, then I would put it in between Tarzan and Atlantis. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, I would give it a 7 1/2 to a 8.

The movie follows the tried and true Disney formula, with re-introduction of the song and dance routines, but that is the Disney formula so it was not surprising.

And just by the audiences reactions (especially the kids, who are honest with their reactions) I believe this should go over well.

There are things I would have done differently, but I really liked it.

:? i really wanted to get hyped about this, but seriously, it just all looks like poor
80's animation recycling to me. I have seen the first 5 (i think) minutes and the trailers,
and i am still trying to figure out what the fuck happened. Where did the good 2D people go?
Nothing , from design, to story beats, to animation (mechanics or acting) makes me want to cheer for my runningthroughmyveins beloved 2D.
The designs are uninspired, and frankly amateurish.
So is the acting for animation, hitting eve-ry-sin-gle-ac-cent- in-the-line-read, going from an awkward meaningless pose to another, using the all too familiar "by the book" gestures to convey moods and feelings.

It seems like an ex girlfriend you see
again at some random party dressed up like a slut, getting trashed and making a fool of herself. You're hurt, somehow, but you want to take a couple of steps back and run away.

I just sincerely hope i am wrong and promise to say so here if i am.

Long live 2D, but please, as of now, not with that.

r.

lol so much hate.

Yeah, my impressions of the first trailer were mixed. It reminded me alot of Aladdin in style and action. The prince reminded me of Aladdin, the villian of Jafar, etc... Which was a little disappointing. The skit humor was forced and annoying as later Disney humor always is, the animation too glossy, and sometimes awkward. Disney 2D animation these days are too smooth and sometimes weightless quality. I did like the part where they just showed the backgrounds even though I hate seeing clues of digital paint and cgi fx. The art's the usual Disney style and overly polished but can be enjoyed if I quit thinking like an artist.

I'm not really excited though I would like to see it do well. And if it's actually a good movie, all the better. To me, the story's what counts most.

As it is a musical, are Newman's songs any good?

For personal reasons I hope this is a huge smash (being a 2D guy from way back), but I have my doubts. I hope I'm wrong and the audiences embrace it and Disney and everyone else starts making 2D again.
Putting it between Tarzan and Atlantis as far as being a good film isn't real good jmad72. Tarzan was decent (not great) and Atalantis...(uh,never mind)

There are more than a few funny bits in the movie, which the audience really, really liked.

The music was great. No complaints. As a matter of fact there were some who clapped along to the routines.

In relation to the image that williambloke posted, there is a scene which breaks away from the art we have seen in the commercials. Pretty effective.

Steve G - In regards to Tarzan and Atlantis, LOL! I know what you mean but I am basing it on those movies b/c, it there was a totally different standard back in the early years of Disney.

I actually enjoyed Atlantis for breaking away from the song and dance routines and trying to usher in an action adventure genre, but people stayed away from seeing it. Therefore, if there was some more movies similar but better than what was on screen for Atlantis, I guess it was shelved.

I am hoping people support the movie. Is it going to be what you or I would have done? Probably not. Is it still a good film. I would say so.

A movie opening to the public is open to public criticism, but sometimes the criticism that is most harsh comes from those that are within the same field. Perhaps b/c we "see" things the general public does not. The thing is, is not to let your critique b/c personal where it comes off as sour grapes.

We all know what happens when you are inside the corporate machine, The creatives could have had the same ideas and feelings we all share. Possibly, but lets not tear into something just for the sake of doing so,

Give it a fair chance with the understanding of the places you have worked at and was not allowed to do things that you wanted to do. It is all relative.

Overall, it was a good film. We all understand what the Disney formula is. It's been there from day 1. Sometimes the formula is very strong as in the past. As of the late 90's the formula is still the same but the execution is not up to some peoples standards.

For this, I think the formula is the same so no surprises there. The execution could be tightened, but it is still a good film.

P.S. Don't take my tone as confrontational. It is easy to misconstrue on the Internet.

Hoping that this comes out soon so I can read/discuss your reactions.
