This is a quick one hour warm up sketch... I do these just to get into "art mode." Overall, I deem this piece okay and I'm looking for some honest criticism so that I can begin improving my technique with even more practice. Thanks!!

Well the most important thing you have to work on at this stage is proportion. I'm not sure if you used reference for this, but if you didn't, you probably should in the future. That will give you a better idea of how the pieces fit together and how they look in proportion to one another.

The specific problems with this drawing are mostly anatomical. The face is too long and his upper body isn't quite right. Keep in mind that the human body is, for the most part, symmetrical. Even with quick sketches, don't be afraid to rough out the proportions before you get into the meat of the drawing.

My advice for the future would be to use reference, either from life (ideal), or from photos (less ideal). You also might want to hold off on doing computer coloring for now and work more on rending light and shadow, which will help you get a better grasp of the forms involved and help when you do move to color. And if you just keep drawing constantly, you'll improve no matter what techniques you use.

Keep at it.

Thanks SeraphSword! That's exactly the critique/advice I've been needing... I've been drawing on and off my whole life and recently I've been getting back into it, this time around I'm looking to work the kinks out and make sure my proportions are correct.

To clarify, I used no references for this study. I did that drawing from scratch. I'll be posting more work as I progress...
