Sooo...I got a Xbox360...

Postby Gorgonzola » Thu Jul 30, 2009 12:57 pm

...well, I will be soon. Anyway, I'm wondering if there's any sorts of hidden gems of games I ought to pick up or check out. I'm pretty much gung-ho on any genre, so throw out whatever you think is worth playing.

Some on the short list that I'm looking to check out:
Dead Rising
Red Faction
Fight Night 4
Viva Pinata (the idea of cannabilizing the children of the pinatas is weird to me...)

There's a few releases coming up later this year that I'd like to check out too, but until then...what does everyone recommend?

crackdown

go download the demo, and then find the green orbs hidden in the city to boost your jumping ability, and then tell me you don't go leaping around the city like an idiot for hours like I did when I played the demo and then got up the next day and snagged a used copy and came home and downloaded 'keys to the city' to activate the cheat codes and kick tour buses and cars and people all over town.

oh.
and 'spawn explosive barrels'.

sweet jesus.
there is no limit to the barrels you can spawn.
ahhhhhhh, the sweet sweet explosions.

so much fun

straight up story mode is a hard ass bitch however.

Awesome, thanks for the suggestions. I figure most of these have demos that I'll give a try first to see if I can see myself sinking some money into them, but there's one or two (probably all I'll be able to get at the moment) that I might pick up immediately.

Did anyone ever play Chromehounds? I'm a huge sucker for mechs, and with the announcement of a new Mechwarrior coming out, it reminded me about this game. Was it any good?

Dunno if it's any good, but it's really cheap now.

Yeah, that's why I figured I might look into it. I guess a plus of getting one 3 years late is there's a good backlog of games that are pretty discounted now...

And yet, I still look forward to Brutal Legend and Batman...

Brutal Legend looks great.

Batman, not so much. Looks like the much vaunted detective stuff is just PRESS A BUTTON AND BATMAN SEES A GLOWING FILING CABINET, and the combat is more or less one button, which absolutely killed Assassin's Creed for me.

Oh yeah, avoid Assassin's Creed. People are going to tell you it's really awesome. THEY ARE LYING.

I wash my hands of Assassin's Creed.

Had a chance to play through it. Was having fun and all that...

Last like...what, 10 minutes of gameplay? Whatever the boss is, killed my whole experience for the game.

Incidentally, the exact same thing happened with Prince of Persia (new one.) Was having a fun time, and the ending absolutely drove me insane. No more!

I might give Batman the benefit of the doubt. Tried it out in the store at one of those kiosks one day, and the challenge room seemed pretty fun. I'm more or less holding out for the now-defunct Eidos to have actually turned a decent game recently.

Now that I think of it, quick question: How is Fight Night Round 4's Legacy mode? Any fun at all? It sounded pretty interesting, and for some reason, out of all sport games, boxing always pulls me in.

I love it. It's the main reason I bought the game.

The training minigames a really hard though, so I basically gave up on actually trying to do those manually and just let them autocomplete. You don't get the max stat boost, but it's better than screwing it up and getting almost NO boost.

Philly - Ah, I already had gotten it for PC! Plus, I'm REALLY terrible when it comes to FPS on consoles...I always wildly swing my gun around too much.

So, I was able to pick one up a few days ago, and I got Fight Night Round 4 (those minigames are ridiculously hard...), and because I completely forgot it existed, Banjo and Kazooie (which has been a LOT of fun.)

I also downloaded a bunch of demos of stuff that people suggested, so I'll be trying those out over time.

So yeah, not many games to play online with, but for anybody interested, my gamertag is Gorgonzola5 (I was dumbfounded that somebody actually took Gorgonzola -- seriously, who would take a cheese as their username besides me!?)

Friend request sent.

I picked up BlazBlue yesterday, and if you're a fan of 2D fighters, it's a blast. Pretty low barrier to entry in terms of a learning curve, too, and it's one of those hilariously over the top fighters.
