I know, I know. I totally missed posting anything last week. To make up for it, today?s post covers two letters of the alphabet! Both minor DC Comics characters, and both very fun to draw.

BTW, thanks for the great suggestions, guys.

Firebrand is a character I?d never even heard of before the name popped up in the comments for this series.

I?d think that big poofy sleeves combined with fire-based superpowers would be tempting fate. But hey, there are worse costume choices out there!

Any thoughts for the next letter, guys?

Yeah, it?s Wednesday, and this is supposed to be an every-Monday series. But I hope you?ll agree that this one was worth the wait.

The gallant Guardian and the glorious Gladiator ganging up on a grouchy Gorilla Grodd!
Image
I took my time with this one, since I?m avoiding real work. ;) My twin goals with this series are to become consistently speedy, and improve my anatomy and proportion. Unfortunately, these goals are often at odds with one another. This time I went with the second goal, and I think it paid off. (Although with every piece I draw, I'm becoming more aware of just how poor my anatomy knowledge really is.)

Now, who should I do for ?H??

H is for Herbie

Postby steve-O » Mon Jul 27, 2009 7:35 am

I missed a few weeks due to crazy deadlines (thanks, SDCC!), so you guys and gals get to watch me play catch-up this week with FOUR Comics Alphabet entries. Boo-yah!

First up this week is Herbie Popnecker, aka the Fat Fury! Herbie was one of those characters that fell through the cracks back in the day until Dark Horse released a set of reprints last year.
MAKE WAY FOR THE FAT FURY!

Starring a taciturn fat kid whose collection of lollipops give him unspeakable power, the all-out weirdness of the Herbie stories must be seen to be believed. Fortunately, Chris Sims of The Invincible Super Blog is willing to give you a look.

I'm still using the old-school 64-color Marvel palette, but I'm experimenting a bit with it. I really love the colors on this one, and I'm surprised at how versatile those 64 colors can be!

Interesting bit of trivia: According to this one thing I saw on the Internet once, Herbie is Watchmen and V for Vendetta writer Alan Moore's favorite comics character.

Coming up this week, Ice, Jimmy Olsen, and-- well, I'm not sure. Turns out Kalibak is a pain to draw. Still taking character suggestions. Anybody want to see Superman's oddball mermaid girlfriend, Lori Lemaris? (that's right. MERMAID. GIRLFRIEND. Way to go, Silver Age.)

Hey guys.
So,L is still open... I don't really want to do Lori Lemaris! But that's the future. Today is here, and today's post is awesome.
I was gonna do DC?s JLA member Ice, but then I remembered that she?s really, really boring.

So I looked around a bit. There aren?t very many cool female characters whose name start with ?I?. Irma Geddon from Top 10 was the only good choice until I remembered this chick.

That?s right! It?s Wu Ao-Shi, the Iron Fist of 1545 AD! Also known as The Pirate Queen of Pinghai Bay. Thanks, Matt Fraction, for making an awesome character whose title starts with ?I?.

J is for Jimmy Olsen!
Yes sir, Superman?s Pal Jimmy Olsen, he of signal-watch fame. I wanted to do the Silver Age version, but there?s no way one illustration could do the madcap lunacy of that period justice. So here?s my Jimmy- kind of an amalgamation of Silver Age, modern, and All-Star Jimmy Olsen.

Kilowog, DC Comics? Green Lantern of Space Sector 647! Ulysses Klaw, a supervillain physicist who wears a sound-emitting gun on his right arm and fights the Fantastic Four and Black Panther!

One of these guys is WAY cooler than the other.
Image
Yeah, so, I like Kilowog. I?d never even HEARD of Klaw until he was suggested for this series. But that?s the fun! I get to draw wacky characters I?ve never heard of, and you get to suggest wacky characters I?ve never heard of. It works for both of us.

This week?s entry features two awesome old-school adventurers.

Lobster Johnson is Mike Mignola?s other brilliant pulp creation: A mythical 1930s New York City vigilante known for branding criminals with his trademark lobster claw symbol, and who eventually showed up in Hellboy stories as an evil-battling ghost.

Lady Blackhawk is DC Comics? crack WWII flying ace and member of the Blackhawks flying squad. She wears a cheerleader skirt, for reasons unknown.

They're a cute couple.

Next week! Metamorpho and Mr. Miracle!
