Character Jam - The Batman

Postby em... » Sun May 24, 2009 8:06 am

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of his first appearance in Detective Comics issue 27 (May 1939), the subject of this first Character Jam in a long time is the Caped Crusader, the Dark Knight Detective - Batman:

Normally, there would be some links to images and/or sites with information about the character, but I think everyone is familiar with this particular hero.

So, to start off, here's something from me:

Great image. I love the exagerated jaw line and the snarl.

Great drawing Em! I love everything about that. Here's my take, it's an older one that I did a while ago but I thought I'd clean it up and give it a background. I'll post one made specifically for this thread later this week.

Thank you both. I started off wanting to do something like the chunky Frank Miller version from The Dark Knight Returns, but as went along it developed into something else.

Gibson89 - I like the mixture of clean line and loose black spotting on this, and his old-style longer sorts.

Em, great looking as always, the steroid linebacker neck is great.

Gibson89, it's crazy but, because of the gradient and the interior of his cape (your color choices are great), if you look at your pic too long, Batman will start to flicker around a little. (Either that or I'm having a stroke). Looking forward to your next submission too!

Selkirk and Toy_Otter, you both did what I always liked about Bats, used his cape to dramatize his moods. Good on both.

Here's mine: Older one, hopefully I can get around to making a newer version.

I've been away from comics for so long that Norm Breyfogle's version of the Batman is what I automatically think of. This is my ode to Norm Breyfolgle.

cool --haven't seen a character jam here for ages (still remember fondly looking forward to the bi-weekly jams that various members hosted).

em: looks good...something very Judge Dredd about that shape. would have been cool if you scarred him up abit too.
Gibson89:like the thick line and the geometric city shapes.
Selkirk: like it...very simple and graphic. you should finish it!
Toy_Otter: he looks pretty scary with that horn growing on his shoulder...lol. like the tension in the gloves and cape.
dmcgrath: haw...that jaw is crazzzzy. are you going to ink it? be interested in seeing where you take it.
Oakhorse: like it...very mysterious with the cowl in complete darkness.

here's a sketchy thing to add to the list:

Yeah, they started off fine, and then there were quite a few that promised to do one but failed to deliver, so I kept having to step in and do something else at the last minute.

I think I'll reinstate them, probably about one a month - interest in whatever monthly Jam there is usually tails off about halfway through the month anyway, so it shouldn't detract from entries to those much.

70 years of Batman... this was bound to happen. So I did a quick one to be the first.

Hey all. Love all the work so far.

Hope no one minds if I contribute something I did a couple of weeks ago. By profession I'm a 3D artist and in some free time I did a digital sculpt of the Dark Knight.

I know it's not strictly a drawing, but it is a 3D sketch :)

Batman, can look so very different depending who draws him, I bought the first season of The Batman last week and love their anime twist on him.

Daniel Cox, - I really dig the storm effect and I like your Gotham City rendition very much. It looks harsh. A great environment for a character like Batman.

Excello - You are right. I thought about that one myself. I'm glad I did not beat you to it becuase yours is WAY better than mine would have been. Very funny.
