I should make it known that I didn't throw up while watching this. I'm not proud of that fact, I'm just saying...

:?

i didn't know guy ritchie was directing this... huh, now that boxing scene looks all too familiar.

really, i don't know what to think of this, some of it seems fun , some seems charmingly entertaining, and some seems cliched and just plain lame.

This is one of those things that's not gonna sit well with me, but not make me convulse in agony...like bad chinese buffet food...

On one hand, Guy Ritchie, which is always fun...on the other, this looks a little...weird? Like, "Is that seafood, or sludge?" weird.

Kinda sucks he doesn't have the classic cap though, huh?
Might be fun though.

Damn, for the first time in a while on this board I'm excited about a movie's release. Not the long-nosed, cap-wearing Basil Rathbone-type Holmes I've grown up to love, but I'm liking what I see none-the-less. I mean, it's got a great cast and an exciting director.

With Downy and Law as the stars, this will arguably be the gayest Sherlock Holmes in history. In his native tongue Downy always comes across as a bit flamboyant. With an English accent he'll be flaming in his knickers. I'm sure Ritchie will provide the testosterone.

My personal secret hope is that this drives down the cost of the DVD sets of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the ridiculously awesome British series from the eighties that boasts Jeremy Brett as Holmes. Brett was the greatest and best Sherlock Holmes of all time.

Otherwise, I'm pretty ambivalent to all this. I guess it's sluttier? More violent? So that's good?

keep in mind, the deerstalker cap etc
wasn't set in stone as holmes's look
until well after the books came out.

and of course, the original holmes was
a martial arts master and a liquid cocaine
fiend. so downey's casting makes a little
sense.

WHAAAAT

Ben, Sidney Paget added the deerstalker to Holmes' look when he illustrated the original stories in The Strand. A deerstalker was the type of hat you'd wear going to the countryside, which is when Paget had him wear it. Otherwise, he was in a top hat or nothing at all. (In my recollection.)

Wow, a history lesson on a movie thread! :D

Now that you gave explanation for that, Kelly, it makes more sense in regards to the movie.

Anyone else wonder if Moriarty would be in this?

kelly - i didn't say he never wore it,
i was just saying it wasn't his trademark
costume until later -- he wore it at certain
times, as did many non-detectives.

the point being, there is nothing revisionist
or mistaken about showing him in nor-
deerstalker clothes.

ps - the recent annotated holmes books
are amazing for reference!

Oh, I see what you meant... From the point of view of the fans, and all that. I figured you'd be on top of that, you're the dude who draws Dracula with the moustache, after all.

It's kind of sad that Holmes is most often associated with his deerstalker 'costume'... His asexual, Tesla-like intellect and cool detachment from regular folk are what makes him great.

ha ha!

"holmes" research was invaluable when
i did "dracula". (then again, so was "the
importance of being ernest".)

i have nothing against the "continuity"
look, i just think it's so easy for people
to forget how many things evolve in the
growth of these sorts of characters.
i think i've been warped by all the
adaptations i've been doing in recent
years -- even WW!

I'm a strictly Basil Rathbone type fellow. Basil IS sherlock.
However i like Robert Downey Junior as an actor... Jude law is a wee bit
of a hump but i think this looks pretty good... me and my dad will be having a peek for sure

Now that Guy's life force is no longer being sucked out by Madonna perhaps the poor man can make a decent movie.

I dunno if this is it.
