[Book] The Art of Bolt

Postby CosmicPencil » Sat Dec 20, 2008 3:30 pm

I am a sucker for movie/animation art books.

The Art of Bolt is another beautiful one. A lot of it has to do with the numerous Paul Felix digital paintings in it. It's only $40 (but luckily I had a 40% off coupon to make it cheaper) and was looking forward to it since Paul Briggs told me about it when I showed a lot of interest into Paul Felix's work.
I am really getting into the maquettes for some reason (first started when I saw the maquettes for Incredibles in that art book) and Raffaello Vecchinone has some pretty amazing ones in here, although it's only five maquettes and covers only 2 pages.

Another winner and I'll happily put it along side my Pixar art books, the rest of my Disney artbooks (Hercules art book is AWESOME!) and Kung Fu Panda/Open Seaon/Monster House art books.

Fantastic book-bought it for myself for Christmas. Felix's work is terrific & there's oodles of other great art-Moshier's character designs, the storyboards, colour keys etc. I'm so happy we're getting decent 'art of' books again from Disney.
Any thoughts on the film itself? It's not released in Europe yet.

I haven't watched the film. Unfortunate for me is that my wife typically isn't too keen on going to see animation on the big screen, although I finally talked her into going to see anything done by Pixar, with her 'instant' loves of The Incredibles, Wall-E and Monsters, Inc.

I do like the Pixar art books as well, although my favorite film art book of the year has to be Kung Fu Panda. I'm kind of torn between the landscape art books and the giant squarebound ones.

Bolt

It's alot of fun. The characters were likable. I thought Travolta's voice was really good. I didn't think I would like him, but i did. Story was cute. Music score good. Worth looking at. The hamster, "Rhino" had the killer lines. Very funny.

The book looks a whole lot better than the movie! The movie was not that great as a story and the animation was even worse.

The Golden book is great. Makes me wish Pixar would jump into 2-D. Alot of their guys started in 2-D including Lasseter himself !

Bolt was a pleasant surprise. I actually enjoyed it a lot more than i thought i would. Thanks for the heads up with the artbook. It looks fantastic, i'll definitely pick up a copy. Oh, and my favorite coffee table artbook is probably Tarzan. I can stare at Glen Keane's rough sketches all day long.

I agree. I only saw Bolt for the first time when I picked up the DVD cheap and I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I was honestly expecting it to LOOK nice, but be rather empty. God help me, I actually LIKED that damn hamster by the end! :D

As a Chris Sanders fan, I am still sad he was let go from that and we never got to see what American Dog might have been, but I sincerely congratulate Chris Williams on a very good result with Bolt.

I'll likely pick up the art book, but I always give the concept art books the benefit of the doubt, because invariably a LOT of very cool and interesting drawings and designs just don't make it onscreen and it's nice to see those for inspiration.

I'm not sure about Israel, but you can probably get it through Amazon. I live in Japan and can get most everything either on Amazon.co.jp (the Japanese site), or, if they don't have it, Amazon.com and just pay for the international shipping. Usually, the price difference is about the same, since American Amazon discounts their stuff a lot. Unless you have to pay import duty, but for books that isn't a problem.

By the way, the Character Design blog often posts video previews of the Pixar (Disney too?) art books on Youtube. Not sure if he did one for Bolt or not yet, but they usually have many images so you can get a good idea before you order it.
