i read the book , couldn't put it down!
very interesting window into the creative
process.
although i have to say, yes "empire" went
in a very different stylistic direction than lucas
intended, and he should be banned from ever
writing dialogue again, but it seems that in terms
of the basic material, he came up with a lot
more of the great stuff than people want to
accept.
as for the "writing on the fly" aspect, i think the
point is not that its some evil conspiracy that
we should all gasp at, but that this explains so
many of the decisions ? both brilliant and
retarded (yes, full retard, lincoln osirus be damned)
? that took the stories in so many interesting
directions.
the only thing that bugged me was how he tried
to defend the prequels by claiming that lucas
was forced into certain corners by earlier de-
cisions (again, the importance of the "on the
fly" issue), and he made the best of what he
had. i certainly don't think he made the best of
what he had, and in any case, your average
eight-year old could have taken an extra hour
back in the 1990s to think up a better overall
plot structure from the get-go, skipping most of
lucas's self-created restrictions.
anyway, i highly recommend this book!
afterwards, i had fun looking at some of my own
junk, thinking back to various influences, or how
changes in this or that forced me to be creative
and go in new directions that i later took for granted...
