Thanks, Gibson. The head-shots are nice, especially of MJ and Gwen, what with how Bruce depicts two pretty girls with distinct personalities with a minimum of lines, but that Wonder Woman kills! I'm really liking the colored pencil work Bruce has been introducing into the negative space for these kind of portraits.
Here's a seriously buff Hal Jordan which makes me miss the JLU series!

daang, that's nice. I really wish Jordan were in JLU minus his one second cameo.

Does anyone know what he used for this piece? Is it Markers and color pencil?
I'd love to learn how to color my artwork this way.

Ha! That's great. It looks like it could be colored pencil with marker, especially those white highlights, but it's hard to know with such a small repro. In any case, as I understand the process, you want to carry the marker rendering to near-finish, spray with fixative to make a new drawing surface, then apply colored pencils for fine details. In practice it's probably more organic than that, with cp over markers, then markers over cp, now spray-fix to get back a workable surface...
Does anyone who's actually worked the two together want to chime in?
Alternatively, there's Brian Stelfreeze's advice; you see a look or style you'd like to emulate, "go with what you know", that is, begin copying the work in question with the media and techniques you're familiar with, then add other techniques and media if and when your chosen, understood systems begin to fail you.
huh. when I read it Stelfreeze said it better, didn't sound so obvious and common-sensical.
Anyway, I looked at your sketchblog, Kristen, seems to me you're well on your way to this look!

Some years ago Lambey asked him for a tutorial and he got these answers...maybe it can be useful for you too. (http://www.drawingboard.org/viewtopic.p ... 656#275656)....ah, and maybe you alreadyknew it.('')

Wow....thanks for responding so fast, Mr. Timm. Ok ok....no tutorial. How about a few quick questions on materials then?

What type of brush do you prefer for inking?

Do you really blend colors using tissue paper ?

Do you use prismacolor pencils on top of the markers?

Last question, do you use regular office paper, or the biefang marker paper?

Sorry to be such a geek, but Im just curious.

brushes:
i never could ink with a brush....or a crowquill or any "respectable" tools...i use crappy cheap felt pens almost exclusively...pilot razor points, bic flairs, sharpies, marksalots, etc...staedtler pigment liners (but mostly just for corrections over white-out)....i LOVE the pentel "presto" white-out pens, don't know how i ever survived without 'em....sometimes i use white gel pens for fine corrections...

tissue paper:
yep, on top of marker base-coat, lay down some color-erase pencil, then smear it with a tissue or paper towel....it's great for that slight "blush" on girls' nose/cheek area, for example...you can blend prismacolor pencil the same way, to a degree, but you gotta REALLY bear down...

prisma on top of markers:
sure...i try to do as much modelling as possible with just the markers, but i usually have to go back in with prisma pencil, to clean up hard edges, hit highlights with white, etc...

you can even reverse the process....base coat of marker, prisma pencil on top, then go over the pencil with more marker...the marker ink melts the pencil, creates a kind-of random blurry/scumbly effect...it's really hard to control (and has a tendency to gum up the marker tip), so i don't do it very often (usually by mistake!)...

paper:
cheap old xerox paper works best for me...NOT laser-copier paper (too waxy), just plain ol' staples five-bucks-per-ream crap paper... bristol papers and boards soak up the ink too fast, suck the markers dry REAL quick...i tried the bienfang marker paper a LONG time ago, don't remember why i didn't like it....

Happy Halloween!

There are a lot of other works by Bruce recently posted at the comicartcommunity site, most of them old faves, but also some new stuff mixed in--new to me, anyway.

I love the gestural quality of this NON WORK SAFE piece, particularly the dark accents of the hair as well as the sense of light on the hair.
