I'm sorry to hear that Micheal Turner is dead. I was not even aware that he was sick. I was not a fan of the work he did, but I will respect the man that produced it. .

I think he deserved at least that much, as does anyone who dies doing what they love.

WOW...i'mn surprised how much this is affaecting me. i just heard the news and actually feel a little tear in my eye. I have been extremely vocal is past years about my distaste for younger artists copying Turner's work...but the fact is there was a time when I LOVED his work. Witchblade and even Fathom were both pretty big books for me

the guy was insanely nice and giving as well...and too young to have to have suffered the way he did

Looking at what I said again, the use of the phrase "crappy art" in my first post was a tad insensitive, given the nature of the news.

I'm not going to edit it, because I'd rather people think I'm an ass who at least can admit it, than try and pretend I never said it in the first place.

I've never met, worked with or employed Michael Turner, so his passing isn't going to affect me emotionally, professionally or financially. The only effect I'll notice is a lack of his artwork where comics are sold - I didn't like his art when he was alive, and his being dead doesn't change that.

So, I'm apologizing for how I said something, but not for what I said. The sentiment still stands

If people want to call me tactless or insensitive, that's their prerogative. But I won't be a hypocrite.

Incidentally, the Board rule about "tact being the order of the day" is meant for member-to-member communication. If we all had to mind our Ps and Qs when discussing everything, then a good part of this section (and about 50% of the Movie section) would no longer exist.

You do realize that, ultimately, your comment was insulting towards 'Tinman2040' don't you? I believe that qualifies as "member-to-member communication".

I wasn't insulted by ems remark, I had no idea Michael Turner passed away nothing was mentioned here and most likely would not have if past vocals were considered. Ironically I was not a huge fan of his work either but to say I hated it would be going over the mark!! There was a few artpieces I liked I had a poster he designed but none of his books. But thats not to say he didnt have a legion of fans, He Did! He gave the witchblade her unique look that they are now making a movie and he created a comics line 'Aspen' I think it was called!! Despite what you may think of him he lived his dream to many of us, it still is a dream!! Ultimately you can't blame a guy for making it!! RIP

Ps. One hopes that drawingboard members are afforded the luxury of a RIP Post, despite whatever their artistic ability or credibility is!!

Damn man.

I may not have liked his art, but doesn't mean he was a bad person.
The guy had been fighting cancer for like 8 years now, and he kept on doing what he loved.
Drawing.

A far far better man than me.

I wasn't sure about posting this here, but figured i'd put it out there

There have been others who have passed away who worked in the comic industry before and though it saddened me, i thought about it for a moment and as empathetic as i can say it, that was that. But since i read about Turner's passing it's just kept nagging at me. I was a fan of the man's work, not a huge fan, but a fan none the less. And now, at the young age of 37, i won't have the privilege of seeing any new stuff he would have produced. But that's not what's really on my mind.

I just keep thinking, here's this guy, this young guy, and he was living his dream (i'm assuming), because he was creating comics for a living. He created his own company to create the comics he wanted to make. And if that wasn't amazing enough, he did it while battling cancer. I never met the man. I saw him once or twice while i attended cons, but by all accounts from his friends and family, he was a loving and generous man. But he was doing what he wanted career wise and did it while combating this enemy all the while. It's been said by others of people who've had to face certain illness' or diseases that in the end they may have died from their ailment, but that ailment didn't win. That's one of two things i think of about Michael Turner now. that, yes he may have died from his battle with cancer, but cancer didn't beat Turner. Turner won, because while he struggled with it, he still came out on top by living his life and never letting it stop him from doing what he wanted to do.

the second thing i think of is, what have i done? I have problems, just like anyone else, but nothing like Mr. Turner faced. And what have i done with my time? I've wasted my time thinking about what i COULD do, all the while not doing it and sitting on my couch, while HE was thinking about things he could do, and WAS doing them! Not only doing them, but he was struggling with his problems, that were so much more serious then what I'm facing.

so i've been thinking about this for over two days now, and want to commit to what i want to do, and that's create comics. I don't know what life has in store for me next week, next month or next year, but I don't want to waste that time thinking about what could be or what should have been. No, I want to take advantage of every opportunity and spare piece of time I'm afforded. And no matter what struggle I face, I want to look it straight in the eyes and say, "No. You won't stop me. You can't stop me."

You will be missed Michael Turner.

crazy sad news, im gonna go ahead and defend his artwork here, when i first saw his stuff i was extremely drawn to it, its very distinct and you have to credit him for comming up with such original looking peices. his books all came with a very specific "atmosphere" to them you know what i mean, when you read them you really felt immirsed in a specific world, micheal turners world, not enough artist can do this the way he did. not trying to say "everybody heres wrong" just trying to offer a diferent perspective is all.

His passing is a terrible loss to his family and friends, but not to the comics' industry.

I think this is uncalled for and should be retracted.

One doesn't have to be a fan of an artist's work to appreciate their presence in the industry AND their impact.
Mike Turner's work sold comics, he touched people both professionally and personally with his grace and talent. Isn't that enough to say his death will indeed be a loss to the industry?

I'm not a fan of his art either, I don't have to be..........yet I cannot deny the man's impact on the industry, nor would I ever seek to diminish it. The above quote does just that, and I think it is very unfair.
People are really too quick to slam others, especially in passing, and very slow to see the merits.
How many people has Mike's work, or work ethic, inspired? How many people has he left smiling after meeting him? How many have felt better for knowing him, either professionally or personally?
Does LIKING his work mean anything in those questions?

No, because its not the measure of his work that sets his place in the biz, its the measure of who he is that speaks far louder.
