Well, yeah, from Goodman's first scene, slowly turning his head to show the eye-patch, I eagerly waited for something great.
And waited.
And waited...

Burn After Reading

Postby Musashi » Thu Jun 19, 2008 8:45 am

Anybody heard about this movie? It's the latest from the Coens starring Clooney, Malkovich, and Brad Pitt. The trailer looks pretty fun and interesting and the one sheet looks really cool.

Edit: Forget it. I just saw the earlier thread.

New trailer!

This one wouldn't make much sense without seeing the previous one but the music is great. I'm so hyped for this.

wow, that poster ris really cool.
I'll go see this film, it looks like a lot of fun, and Brad Pitt seem to be on a roll here, both this film and Benjamin Button look very interesting.

But why do I get the feeling Pitt's character will die in this film? I have a feeling you won't see him anymore when Clooney's character gets introduced.

I don't care about that poster ..But the Cohens rule...They've yet to make me regret paying to see a single one of their movies... I even love LadyKillers!

I suffered through that movie waiting for it to get good. And it never happened.

I waited a long time to see the Ladykillers (I'm a fan of the original with Alec Guinness) and eventually bought it after finding it for 8 bucks in a used dvd shop. There's a lot in it that's likeable, I actually do like Tom Hanks, but the whole thing never really comes together in a satisfying way. Intolerable Cruelty and the Ladykillers are definitely the Coens' lowest point in their career.

I disagree..Once I watched Lady Killers as the "Act-off" it was i fell in love with it...Way better than Hudsucker..Wich to me is an entertaining low point....And I don't care for Barton Fink at all..Not entertaining to me..But Not a real "miss" either.

SO

it was pretty good. Not great, but not bad.

****SLIGHTLY SPOILERISH REVIEW (without actually getting into plot points or specific dialogue)****

It gets off to a slow start. It seems confused about what path it wants to take, and feels disjointed because it doesn't want to have a central character, so we end up sitting with characters for long periods of time while wondering what's going on with the others at the time. It's definately more of a theme-driven movie as opposed to a plot-driven one. I think the advertising for it was off a lot, and gives the viewer expectations of something that they are ultimately NOT going to see.

It is genuinely HILARIOUS. There are moments of gut-busting laughter. Both George Clooney and Brad Pitt are comic genuises in this movie, and their performances even more so than the dialogue they're given gets them a LOT of laughs. Malcovich is of course great, and while he is given some funny material to with, his character is morose, very negative, and at the same time very victimized throughout the film.

sooooo...it's worth seeing, but in the end I would probably call this one of the weaker Coen Brothers films. Will discuss further once others have seen it

Really enjoyed this one. Outright hilarious, with great performances throughout. I don't know yet where I'd place against other Coen films. I always have to watch their movies several times before I can really judge them, even their comedies (except Ladykillers).

i agree with the comment about it taking it's time to get going. but it definitely got there. really great movie, and brad Pitt's character was hilarious, "appearances can be deceptive."haha. and a very satisfyingly weird ending.
