considering your other stuff generally is far far far better than this, I wonder why you
post it at all. it took you 8 minutes... I would suggest you spend 20 minutes on something
or even more time. It always makes me scratch my head when someone says how long it took them... especially when it is a matter of a few minutes. I mean, what difference
does it make? Similarly pointless would be if you told me how much food you ate while
you did the drawing.

You are much better than this... ha ha, sorry fella...

Hmmm I think putting a doodle or a quick sketch in here is perfectly fine hence why its called the sketchbook section. However I dont think time is a mitigating factor. Im not familiar with your work so please excuse me.

If you'd have said "I was doing this waiting for a bus and I liked 'x' about it"

or

" I dont normally do this style I was trying something quick"

This would be fine - The time itself is irrelevant as at best it implies you did something you'r not proud of but it was only 8 minutes, so using the time thing as an excuse

Or at worst it says hey look how awesome I am I did this and it only took me 8 mins which comes off arrogant

---

I think the pic is quite cool, like I say, I've not had a look at your blog yet. Sometimes I put time limits on myself to try and force me to work more positively so then its kind of relavant I guess. If this was part of a daily exercise to see how much better you could get then it has a place

christ Ive bored myself sorry !

Hello all.
It's true, I should have expanded on the point of the piece.
I'd recently answered a thread about sketchy marks and clean lines. I commented on the fact that the most important thing I find about my own work and that of others are the sketch/loose drawings. I really like scribbly lines and the idea that a piece can take any form as you are working on it. Most of my work is based on loose lines anyway (if you look at my work on my blog).
Most of my colouring is done with Photoshop and Painter, but my initial stages come from real materials, like mechanical pencil, paint, charcoal etc.
As I was working on an illo in Photoshop, I had a new canvas open and was using it like a scratch pad. In the end, I had carved a character out of the sharp lines and thought that it looked quite interesting with the contrast between the black lines and the white background.
I posted it beacuse I genuinely thought it was interesting. I wasn't posting it as a finished illo compared to what I normally post, hence why I put it in sketchbook forum.
I think the problem I had after posting it, is that compared to my regular postings, it was in a way inferior, but I was personally trying something new, otherwise I may as well keep posting the kinds of work year after year.
Probably the most dificult thing for an artist to do is carve out his/her own style, and when when you have, you still want to try out new things.
The great thing about drawingboard is that for the first time, I actually get unbiased advice from other artists around the world. Yeah the crit can sting at times, but that's the whole point about crit, you're not going to produce a masterpiece every single time. Be great if you could, but when I'm trying something new, sometimes it's crap, sometimes it's good.

Maybe I would have had a different resonse if I'd given it a different title...who knows?

Anyway, here is an updated version of the piece, hope you like it.

the second one is only about 42,000 times better than the first.

I understand what you say about the scratchy loose lines but you must remember this
is on a computer and the line is a set colour and apparently a set weight
a pencil or a biro would yield much more satisfactory results if it is that loose construction look you want

I like the first one a lot more than the second.
It has elements that defy traditional art "rules."
But the "mistakes" add to the expressive nature of the piece.
The first is more raw, more immediate, more honest.
To me, the guy has more of a back story in the first drawing.
This is a portrait of the essence of the man.
He's been in fights and lost.
He's been dumped and duped and denied.
I want things to start to going better for him.

But, that's just me. : )
