no it doesn't weep.... it 'peeps'. that is the genius of Tamale Jubilee... she actually convinced a guitar to break character, pop up from behind a bush and quite literally 'peep'

I think that maybe for the people at festivals with things to do and possibly with an idea that they are there to critique the offerings then it may fall flat in some fashion 'well it was no Ben Hur gentlemen... but then again neither was spartacus... or jaws.. it's really quite paint your wagon but with shades of 9 to 5...the credits were a little too blue for me.. blah blah'... I went along with three chicks... an inuit, a native american and a country singer and we laughed, rolled about and generally had a lovelly old stab at it. We all thought it was marvellous and emerged smiling and all of a jiggle. Maybe i missed the cleverness gone awry... the buggered imagery and all that.... it was laughable? I thought that was on purpose, I laughed all through it... ignorance is bliss right?

I still recommend it. 46 thumbs up from me

....a guitar that weeps... that's funny right?

I thought it was great!

The only real pretense, I thought, was knitting the different Beatles songs together... Otherwise, it's about as light and fluffy as one would expect from a musical. I especially enjoyed the goofy puppet-faces in the Vietnam-draft-physical sequence, the magnificent Joe Cocker appearance, Strawberry Fields, and the Mr. Kite bit.

Good performances from the six leads, too.

Saw it last night for the first time. I was ready to not like it since it's sort of been panned and I find Julie Taymor to be a pretentious-art-student-done-good but goddamn if I didn't love it. The movie is gorgeous and the renditions of songs ranged from good enough to genius.

I can see why critics didn't like it. Many mention the simplistic, cliched story. But I think the story didn't need to be too complex when it's being told with deceptively simple pop songs. The combination of a simple story, great songs, and complex imagery worked really well.

There were really too many highlights to mention for me. I just enjoyed the shit out of it.

But, of course, if one doesn't like the Beatles (and if you don't, then kill yourself), then this ain't the movie for you.

Pleased to see so many folks hereabouts speak favorably of this film.
I love Taymor's work (whilst acknowledging Rick's reservations).

Agreed. Best also to stay away if you generally loathe musical theater.

Of course, assuming reasonable self-knowledge, you should be able to figure out such things for yourself.

I bought the special edition soundtrack and the DVD for my wife on Valentines Day. Even on the big soundtrack they are missing "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Kind of a bummer.

There was another version that came out before the one you have that was a Best Buy exclusive which contains I Want You and Why Don't We Do It In The Road but only has one of the instrumental tracks. I bet you can find those tracks on your favorite p2p program or maybe iTunes or Amazon.

I watched this, among several others, during the 6000 hours it take to fly from New York to Melbourne.
It was one, among several others, that I turned off after 25 minutes.
Would like to have been more positive about it but think it's a wandering mess.

Admittedly, the first half hour or so does wander. The character introductions were somewhat awkward. I may have given up on it if it wasn't so pretty and I didn't like the songs so much. I'm glad I didn't.

Also, the last place I'd watch such an audio/visual entertaining movie is an airplane.

My sister said something similar about Moulin Rouge and asked me to put something else on, and by the end of it she was in tears telling me it was great.

I'm not saying, Elliot, that you would have felt different by the end.. but you might have. Though, I do think it's fair to assume the beginning of a film is representative of the whole thing, but it's not always the case.

I'd meant to write something witty about this in my first post...
I'm sure I'll revisit the film one day.
