Gannon's life drawing thread

Postby Jarhead1 » Thu Feb 07, 2008 11:17 am

I'm making a concerted effort to make a systematic study of life drawing. I've pulled a few resources together, like the Andrew Loomis books, and a few others. I've started meeting with a figure drawing sketch group once a week. I'll post some of the drawings here to gage progress. As always comments and crits are welcome.

To start it off, here is a picture I drew of my daughter:

Here are the sketches from week 1 of the figure drawing group. I can see that I have some basic issues to work through with regard to proportion. The model was very tall and skinny, but I think I overdid it. I'm reading up on methods of measuring so hopefully I'll see some improvement.

Here are some sketches from week 2. Not a lot of improvement from last week, but I'll keep at it.

They are all very expressive and dynamic. Incredibly interesting.

Darkthorn: Thank you very much!

I've been using Andrew Loomis's book, "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth" to bone up on my anatomy and proportion. Since I cartoon most of the time, I can hide gaps in my knowledge that I can't get away with when attempting realism. Overall, I found that my knowledge of the muscles is pretty good from weight lifting. My knowledge of the bones, however is where I found a few cracks in the foundation.

This exercise exposed that my understanding of how the pelvis and femur work in the body. It doesn't seem like much but I feel like my drawing is improving with this knowledge. It'll take a little while to commit all this to memory and to automate the knowledge into my drawing, but it's a good start:
