I saw it the other night and quite enjoyed it, though I'm definitely glad I saw it in the theatre with an audience because I don't think it would have been as funny at home.

It's a bit fat, there are scenes that definitely overstayed their welcome (the Beatles scene, which from the trailer looked like it would be really funny, ended up being long and kind of tedious), and overall it could have benefited from some liberal editing. With that many cameos and bit parts though, most of them likely friends of Apatow, it must have been very hard to cut things out, but unfortunately it feels long.

The performances are fantastic throughout, and really make the movie what it is - the script is decent but a bit shallow, for the most part merely stating the cliches of the biopic genre in a heavy-handed, obvious way, but the actors are so good that they make even the plainest lines funny. If a crop of less-talented actors were given this script I don't think it would have worked as well. John C Reilly is really great and does surprisingly good imitations of Cash and Orbison (Dewey Cox is a blend of those two) and even Bob Dylan.

Overall I got some solid laughs out of it and it's worth seeing.

I saw this last week and I agree, for the most part. Although I enjoyed the live-action part of the Beatles bit more. I really enjoyed Paul Rudd hamming it up and all of them calling each other by their full names. Seemed like a hilarious way of reminding everyone, including the audience, of who they were supposed to be. Because obviously, none of them looked like the actual people. (Jack Black doing the world's worst/best Paul McCartney, anyone?) That's a whole movie, in my opinion.

i saw an advance of this about 6 months ago. I wonder how much of it changed since then. I thought it was really well done. Tim Meadows was by far my favorite part - every time dewey is introduced to a new drug I was laughing and laughing and laughing

the penis in the hotel scene was one of the most stupidly funny moments in any movie ever as well

oh, and also "well i think i'm doing a pretty damn good job for a 14-year old with a wife and a baby!"

The horrible impersonations were a great gag (Frankie Muniz as Buddy Holly was inspired) but I kind of wish they'd used more musicians - Jack White as Elvis was ten times funnier than Jack Black as McCartney, and seemed weirdly more appropriate. Although it would probably be difficult to find a bunch of musicians who could be funny onscreen.

Jack White was a nice touch. Wait a minute....Jack White....Jack Black. COINCIDENCE????

One thing's for sure. I'll never be able to watch another famous musician biopic again without giggling because of this movie.
