I was gonna start a thread on this.
Picked it up the other day.
Fell in love with the lead girl almost instantly.
Some crazy art and kinda sexy shit going on.
Starts off as a bondage/ damsel in distress fetish book, becomes a superhero romance
by the end.
I dug it big time.
I hope there is a second volume.

I bought the book for Warren's beautiful artwork, read the first few chapters and was sort of embarrassed by the wank-book aspects of the story. My girlfriend was at my studio and saw the book on my desk, and I winced as she picked it up to flip through it. At first she was going through and wryly pointing out all the T&A shots - "ass....ass....ass...boobs...ass...." - but then she actually got engrossed in it and sat there, eagerly reading the book and getting genuine entertainment out of it, nudging me and showing me the parts she found funny.

I still haven't read it all but I feel better about owning it. :p

Yeah.....I kind of have to give ole Adam props for both exploiting and then exploiting the exploitation.
At least there's a heart of gold under it all.

I guess he'd said these stories have been part of some mailing list of his for the last several years?

adam definitely knows how to have his cake and eat it, too....

love the book, hope it sells a bazillion copies....he deserves a much wider audience than he's gotten so far with his "pseudo-manga" work (DIRTY PAIR, BUBBLEGUM CRISIS, etc)...

Reading his deviant art page....it's makes me sad that anyone as badass as him, would ever be unemployed and have to resort to wank commissions.

That's some severe bullshit.

But we need to get on that mailing list though.

Cam, I too was a little embarrassed when I first opened it up ? especially since I opened it up in the office of my part-time job! Not that I have a problem with that but it was definitely a bit more explicit than I thought it would be from reading the Previews ad. But it is a very fun book, and I really like seeing it in pencil. All the energy is right there in your face. This is my favorite of the work of his I've seen.

Where the hell has this guy been? I used to be obsessed with Warren's artwork. I remember meeting him in San Diego and being amazed by his fully-pencilled thumbnails. It was the first time I met an artist who drew smaller, then blew the artwork up to trace. I was fascinated and perplexed by the process. ("This guy draws his comics twice?!?!?")

Definitely have to go pick this up.

tell me about it, rick! i first met adam at comic-con about 12 years ago, and saw some of his incredibly detailed DIRTY PAIR "thumbnails" (he was selling 'em so cheap, i snagged about ten of 'em)....they're almost as "finished"-looking as his EMPOWERED pages....i couldn't believe that he then blew 'em up, traced and tightened 'em, and then inked 'em...so he basically drew each page THREE times...he admitted that it was an unnecessarily involved way to do comics and bemoaned the fact that the final pages also inevitably lost a little "oomph"...later, he started doing his "commission" work on linen-finish paper, which gives it that lovely unique textured quality....i know i'm not the only person who suggested that he just have his pages printed directly from the pencils, but although he was worried that his pencilled "half-tone" technique might not work too well with fuly-rendered computer color, he did start experimenting with it.... the last issue of his GEN-13 run has a story that he drew that way and i thought it came out looking pretty sweet....

anyhow, i agree that EMPOWERED is his best work yet....it's naughty but sweet, and REALLY funny, and the characters are just immensely appealing and likeable.... terrific, terrific stuff!

I can't wait to pick this up. I've been a Warren fan since back in the early Dirty Pair days as well,
and was extremely happy to find him recently on DeviantArt.

I'm glad to hear he's got fans here on the Board as well....and that feedback from those who've
read Empowered seems to be quite positive.

I hadn't taken into account his inking the pages as well, Bruce. That dude works too hard!

I bought it and I think any artist(I've never been published but I've done plenty of commissions) who does commissions can sympathize with the plight of getting paid by a bunch by perverts to draw some psuedo bondage(and I always kept it pretty clean but I've met people who should be on the FBI watch list, seriously, I felt like my pictures were the only thiing keeping the guy from "realizing his dream"). I'm sure people who are actually working proffesionals must have some real stories to tell.

I always thought that Warren's Teen Titans one shot and especially his Dirty Pair Run From The Future was some of the best science fiction ever in comics(Akira is up there, but most american comics are pretty lazy, and Ghost In The Shell is pretty must nonsense, I love Shirow, but the guy needs to get his head out of his techno ass jsut try reading those footnotes).
