Postby drugmassacre » Sun Dec 17, 2006 12:06 pm

I have put together a "best of 2006" mixtape. The order reflects sequencing more than it does which songs i like better than others.

1. Dresdan Dolls - "sing"
2. Head Automatica - "lying through your teeth"
3. Eagles of Death Metal - "i want you so hard (boys bad news)"
4. Elefant - "uh oh hello"
5. NOFX - "the man i killed"
6. Rise Against - "roadside"
7. Shiny Toy Guns - "starts with one"
8. The Knife - "forest families"
9. Thursday - "running from the rain"
10. Jesu - "stars"
11. Carpark North - "fireworks"
12. Cursive - "big bang"
13. Dillinger Escape Plan - "angel"
14. Brand New - "the archers' bows have broken"
15. Apoptygma Berzerk - "is electronic love to blame?"
16. Planes Mistaken for Stars - "Penitence"

Like most years, I did a lot more listening to old albums than I did new ones but a few did come out this year that I played the shit out of. In no particular order:

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones.
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury.
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale.
Lily Allen - Alright, Still.
Thom Yorke - The Eraser.
Damien Rice - 9.
Wolfmother - Wolfmother.
The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers.

Yeah...those are the ones I remember.

Honorable mention to Gnarls Barkley.

Last year you guys did this "Best of" thread and it turned me on to a bunch of great hip-hop--stuff I hadn't even heard of. Does anyone have an updated list of good stuff this year?

Maximo Parks debut A Certain Trigger (though it came out the year previous) was probably the cd I listened to the most this year, along side the Arctic Monkeys it was nice to hear English guitar bands with a vocalist that doesn't sound like he has a London NW postcode. Kind of like how Buzzcocks sounded differently to all the South East punkbands all those years ago.

I mostly still listen to that old list. I can't remember listening to anyone new this year. Did I already recommend Little Brother? Their latest is amazing.

How about Gym Class Heroes? Fun, late 80s/early 90s inspired stuff.

I love love love his first album. I wish it had come out during my 20s. It would have totally been my soundtrack. I haven't listened to his latest yet.

I think his stuff is a breath of fresh air in R&B.

i picked up "Get Evens," the second album from Ian mackaye's new project, THE EVENS, the other day whilst christmas shopping. It's really, really good. Nice and lo-fi: guitar, drums, and a male and female voice recorded directly to tape on an 8 track. It will definately penetrate my "best of 2006" list, just as their self-titled album 2 years ago managed to top my yearly list

I agree completely. There's a lot of generic crap out there, but I found his first disk to be quite good. Haven't heard is latest though.

This year I listened to a LOT of Band of Horses, f'ing awesome disk. Runners up were Catfish Haven, TV on the Radio, Decemberists, The Elected, Beck, Built to Spill, and Thom Yorke from Radiohead's solo.

Hip hop I listened to J5, The Roots, Cut Chemist, and a bit of Lupe Fiasco... his track 'kick push' brought me back to the days of skating as a kid in the 80's.

Also, out of left field, I got back into The Cure and Digable Planets. Wierd.

I couldn't get into the new J5 at all. And I'm a long time fan. The Lupe Fiasco debut is pretty good. And I definitely got back into Dig Plans when I saw them live last summer.

I wasn't able to buy that many cd's this year, but some albums that came out that i've really been into are:

Band of Horses - Everything all the Time
Viva Voce - Get Yr Blood Sucked Out (which also wins my "favourite album title of the year" award)
Silversun Pickups - Carnavas
Appleseed Cast - Peregrine
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones
Starflyer 59 - My Island
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood

I guess everything else i've been listening to is older

Oh yeah, and the "biggest disappointment of the year" award goes to .....
DJ Shadow - The Outsider
