I'm eager to see that John Hitchcock "Doodlebook", myself.. I know he was a good friend of Alex Toth, over a great many years.. So I expect that there would be a lot of great memories & material, to substantiate assembling a proper collection..

I was saddened to hear (from someone who would know about such things..) that despite Hitchcock kindly offering to contribute to a forthcoming Toth "tribute" issue of ALTER EGO magazine.. He was turned-down flatly by it's editor: Roy Thomas. Due to Roy's allegiance to one of his regular A.E. staffers; who held a stubborn (Toth-like) personal animosity towards Hitchcock?

"Bad Blood" wasn't something that Toth invented, obviously. But petty jealousies still persist, that prevent collaborations between people/artists.. that most of us would actually ENJOY seeing.
Sometimes these kinds of things, just happen. I'll confess that there are people/artists that I would choose NOT to work with again, given half -a-chance.. based on previous ugly encounters.

It sounds like with Toth, though.. That he had many more bad experiences, than good? Maybe it's his cantankerousness, just made it sound that way? In any case, it's always disappointing to hear about those kinds of things!

House of Secrets does have the Toth doodle book. They have spread out on various racks around the store, but I saw several copies there today.

I only went to my comic shop on Thursday, and after reading that the new Toth book was out, I was expecting it to be in my bag, only to find out it hadn't gotten shipped there yet

the latest COMICS JOURNAL has several items devoted to toth's passing, including a startlingly frank "appreciation" by chaykin -- he praises the work, slams the man -- and an absolutely hilarious groth/toth "conversation" from ten years ago... apparently intended to be an extended career-spanning interview, it ends abruptly/prematurely with toth snarling "you're full of shit, gary groth." and hanging up the phone...

Bruce, please tell me what number that issue of The Comics Journal is or tell me who's featured on the cover, so I can call the comic shop and have them set it aside for me. I haven't reallybeen following TCJ for the past two or so years after years of getting it regularly. Thanks.

it's ish # 277, for july, the "30 years of the comics journal" special....word of warning: aside from the toth stuff, i found the rest of the issue to be absolutely disposable....and it ain't cheap: $12.95...

Bruce, as it turns out, I ordered it...I hope. I remembered ordering the 30th Anniversary issue, but don't know if Toth stuff was mentioned when it was solicited for or was added cuz he died. As I checked my email list order to the comic shop, I had typed TCJ #278 but did have my order mentioning the May Previews for July shipping and did indicate the catalog page, so hopefully I get the right issue...or did you typo? I'd check the catalog but give Previews to a friend each month once I'm done going through it.

Thanks again.

Hey, gang! I mentioned in a previous post how we should come up with Toth-like hand written and doodled letter pages. Anyone do any?

The Johnson interview was alright, I like him. It is a high price for the Toth section, and no colored reprints. That Toth/Groth conversation would get brought up at tcj.com every once in a while-with talk of Groth's shocked reaction to the expletive hang-up. Maybe this dulled me? To me, the words on paper read like comedy.

Coincidentally, I had included a Timm quote (from a past interview) in one version of the obituary, but unfortunately it didn't make it into the issue.

Earlier on this thread, I posted one I did a couple of years ago, but I think I removed it later to conserve space. Here's a link:

Toth growth...Groth moth...Thorne porn

Postby The Donster » Mon Aug 07, 2006 5:43 pm

I'm still waiting for the Dear John Toth book to show up at my shop.

I just finished reading the Toth articles in Comics Journal #277 today. Just as I started reading the part with Gary Groth interviewing Toth, it popped into my head that Toth rhymes with growth and Groth rhymes with moth, and that little rhyme about rhymes stuck in my head all day. And in the interview, Thorne's work in porn comics was discussed, and now I just realized that that is another little rhyme...Thorne porn.

Oh, and Spamster, your Tothish letter does rule!
