Rockabilly, Psychobilly... Anyone? Anyone?

Postby masseysketch » Thu Feb 16, 2006 1:47 pm

Am I alone on this board in my love of Rockabilly, Psychobilly and such?

(And let me head off the jokes like "No but I like "Rapabilly" or "Operabilly" or whatever "billy" you thought you would throw out there  )

I used to listen to Tiger Army, but that's really been my extent of the genre. i enjoy going to rockabilly shows, however. The atmosphere is a lot better than the music, in my opinion

Admittedly there is a lot of crap to wade through to find the good stuff... a lot of bad local bands and such. Though I guess they're all local bands really. There hasn't really been a band with a national acceptance since the Stray Cats and that lasted about five minutes here in the US...

There's some really cool bands that ride the line between rockabilly and punk... like Hank III or The Legendary Shack Shakers (An odd bunch those fellas) and such...

I love classic rockabilly. Especially the stuff that came out of Sun Records.

I could hug you for that... but I won't.

The classic Sun stuff is truly great.

Aww... how sweet.

Thank you for not hugging me.

Have you seen that new rockabilly DVD that Kris Kristofferson is hocking on TV? I was wondering if it would be worth picking up.

hank III & Assjack is okay stuff. i'm certainly not saying all the music is shit, i'm just personally not into it. i like seeing them live, but i wouldn't buy records. Tiger Army was of the punk/pyschobilly variety, and had some good stuff, but i'm just not that into it anymore

I dig pshycho/rockabilly...its a great genre to experience live. I posted a few good bands over in the Metal and Punk suggestions page:
The Cramps
The Reverend Horton Heat
The Meteors
Nekromantix
Demented Are Go!
Frantic Flintstones
The Quakes
And there are many others, of course. I got to see Tiger Army perform once, I dug their energy but didnt really dig their sound. One group I've been really getting into lately is Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys. They are more pop than rockabilly, but the good kind of pop...the snappy, well written, stays in your head but you dont mind pop. The guitar work and vocals are top-notch, I reccomend you check em out if you havn't already.

And for all you local cats (Los Angeles) I HIGHLY recommend you check out "America's Singing Sweethearts" The Red Elvises. http://www.redelvises.com/ They got their start performing on 3rd St Promenade in Santa Monica until they got too popular, and still play every couple of months at Rusty's Surf Ranch on the Santa Monica Pier (they got a show there Sat. April 1st) If you've seen Six String Samurai, they were the band with the "nice shoes" and they also provided most of the soundtrack. They are Russian (excpet for the drummer) and are absolutely nuts. They put on one of the funnest shows I've ever seen, hands down.

Big Sandy's great... and the Rev, well, that goes without saying.

I wish I could get to the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly weekender coming up... Oh well.

Awesome.

Tiger Army were really impressive when i saw them live, but the three support bands all sounded identical.

The Living End are fantastic, but gradually they've pretty much dropped the rockabilly sound over the course of their last few albums. They're now more punkish rock with a double bass.
But if you haven't heard their second album Roll On, check it our, it's a classic.

The Cramps rule, of course (tho I'm still not 100% on that last album..)

Oh, and The Meteors were kinda fun too.
