Character Jam - The Phantom Stranger

Postby Hack » Mon Jan 16, 2006 1:38 am

Welcome back to the weekly Character Jam.

This week: The Phantom Stranger

In 1952, The Phantom Stranger #1 introduced a mysterious new force in the DCU... and was canceled 5 issues later. But a scant 17 years after that, DC would relaunch the series with Len Wein, Bob Kanigher, Neal Adams, & Jim Aparo at the helm. This version of the Stranger would go on to be an integral part of both DCU and Vertigo lore. One thing has remained a constant throughout the years. His mystery. He has no name. He has no origin. He is a Stranger.

"If he's human, then I'm a toast-rack." John Constantine

Here's my go.
I gave him a trenchcoat instead of a cape, I think it's more mysterious.

Hack: Rad illustration. And great pic. I am looking forward to doing one myself.

Euan: Sweet painting. I like the glowing eyes. Very suddle.

Cobblepot: The trechcoat works very well. Good idea hiding his eyes. Very mysterious.

This is going to be a busy week.

em...: moody and intimidating, brother... and should I add awesome? :D
Cobblepot: cool tones and atmosphere in your piece :D
jokerman725: I like "I am gonna punch you in the face" feel of it :D

These are all really good takes on the Phantom Stranger.
If the gig poster doesn't take up too much of my time this week I will try and pull something out.

hack: great choice -- hadn't thought of this character for ages as he's always been a little bit of an enigma to me. like the pic, the stranger himself looks great and the background design element is cool too (great tentacles). but to me, they aren't meshing quite yet. maybe knock back the stranger or bring the bg element forward. but that's just me, so feel free to ignore:) euan: great stuff as always -- and great touch with the pulp novel (green) lighting. he's got some bling, that's for sure! cobblespot: similar idea to Euans, but with different mood -- nicely done. jokerman: it's a good start, but if you get time maybe go back and look closely at your construction and then line quality. or just more onto the next one:) eliot: good effort. francesco: it may just be safari, but the image is only loading as a thumbnail? is it displaying correctly for you?

Cobblepot - Great solemn and moody piece; jokerman725 - I don't think I've ever seen the Stranger look as angry as this, he's usually such a calm character; Elliotanimated - I feel the beastie isn't so much dangerous as slightly annoyed at the Stranger for not obeying the polite rules of etiquette and removing his hat indoors :D TheRonin - Superb design, my friend; visual myriad - Wonderful illustration, Daniel. Love everything about it.

Hack - cool monster and ps I like the peach bg
em... great face and the and the second light source green works well
Cobblepot - nice tonal study but something abt his hat bothers me
jokerman725 - would like to see some blacks spoted in ther to tie it all together
Elliotanimated - wonder if you ment it to but the ps looks like a fly with the crosshatching for wings and the monster looks like a huge spider very creepy
TheRonin - you truly make him look like the man of mystery he is great concept design and execution
visual myriad - great lighting atmosphere very eye catching
JoeBun -nice straight forward pieceI wonder what it would look like if you blackend the top part of his forhead

heres mine 2 ruffs not sure which i like better I may work one of them up into to a finished drawing in the second one he is supposed to be walking thru a interdimensional doorway hence the stars (hope thats not to simlar to Francesco concept if so appoligizes in advance .)
