Inkers who can save anything?

Postby MartinRedmond » Tue Dec 20, 2005 3:55 pm

I was going to start a thread about those awful inkers who ruin any book, but I... I... I guess I'll do-it another day! So here goes:

Steve Leialoha could make anything look cool!
Scott WIlliams, especially when he started-out.

KEVIN NOWLAN
He has a very distinctive style and can seem to show up who he inks over but still does make them look good. The only time I think he was really hard to spot was when he inked Mike Mignola for an Aliens oneshot.

Al Williamson. Krenkle helped form him into a classy, elegant draughtsman, and in inking he imparts class and elegance to whomever he's covering.
P. Craig Russell.

I agree that Janson can ruin good pencils, but I think he can make bad pencils look decent. I am not a huge fan of his overall body of work, but he and Romita Jr. do look great together. I also like his work over Erik Larson.

Obviously, Nowlan is an inking Genius.

I think that Mike Manley is a pretty darn good inker. He can work over just about any style and he doesn't superimpose himself onto the pencils as much as Nowlan.

Wally Wood was a damn fine inker as well. Incredible, really. Like Manley, he could work over different looks.

Mark Farmer has to be considered one of the greats.
I would rank Whilce Portacio up there as well.

Johnny Craig.
Jack Davis.

Granted, those guys never worked on others' pencils (as far as I know) but, man, could they work a brush!

Two under-rated guys in my opinion are Cam Smith and Wade VonGrawdbadger.

Lifields pencis are improved, every time some one inks over them. No matter who the inker is.
