Jam 13 - Euro Comics (including British comics)

Postby em... » Fri Dec 31, 2004 5:28 pm

Hey, everybody, Happy New Year!

So, it's been a year since we started these monthly jams in the superhero section, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has taken part and helped to make them a resounding success.

This month's subject is European Comics. There are quite a number of regulars here who are European, and I thought it about time we had a jam that wasn't quite so American-centric (probably not a real word). As there probably wouldn't be a lot of entries for a jam just dedicated to continental Europe, I have decided to include British comics in the mix, which should open up a few more possibilities (2000ad characters in particular, including Judge Dredd)

Those who are familiar with the diverse range of characters published in Europe will probably welcome the chance to get your teeth into something a little different (from Tintin and Asterix, to Blueberry and Blacksad), and those who don't - well, it should be an education, and will hopefully encourage you to seek out some comics that don't involve people in capes hitting each other (not that there's anything wrong with that).

To start off, a character from something I've never actually read - Torpedo 1936. Created by Enrique Sanchez Abulli and originally drawn by Alex Toth, and later by Jordi Bernet.

(This pic wasn't meant to be as rough as it is, but I stupidly saved the flattened, low res version on top of the larger layered version  mid-way through doing it)

Evenin' all. I hope you all welcomed the New Year in with style, I wish everyone success for 2005.

That looks like one tough hombre there Em!

Say Hello to Colonel Dan Dare of Interplanet Space Fleet. Dan Dare first appeared in Eagle Comics back in the '50's if anybody was interested.

Also I believe Grant Morrison wrote one of his last stories in the 80's (I could be wrong on the date there though!)

Hello people, here's a Corto Maltese I did today (first drawing of the year!), in a software some of you must be familiar with, OpenCanvas. I tried to do something loose and slightly diferent from my "style", as a sort of - poorly achieved - tribute to Corto's creator, the unbelievable Hugo Pratt http://www.lambiek.net/pratt_h.htm

First of all, Happy 2005 to everyone! :)

em...: great Torpedo portrait, very in style, Euan :) Too bad you never read the
comics since they are too cool, in terms of drawings and story. Abuli & Bernet are one
of the best team in the comicbook I have ever read: theur stories are funny, though,
entertaining, and NEVER boring. Definitely something I would suggest you all to read :)
Sam: cool Tank Girl, Sam :) (and if I am not wrong, this is not the first from you,
right? ;)). Your style is very in line with the one of the comics I read few years ago :)
ricochet1980: really neat Dan Dare: love the clean inklines :) I must still have a
couple of Dan Dare books full painted (even if they are in my collection in Italy :(). I
remember being a very ala "Flash Gordon" comicbook
Sobreiro: really great Corto portrait, Felipe! :) Corto has been another of my
childhood favorite readings. You captured Pratt's style quite well. Too bad Pratt died
few years ago :( I know they are working on a animated movie based on his hero Corto
Maltese
. Let's hope it will be faithful to Pratt's vision.

I have been busy during this holidays with a form of art that is not that famous but
sometime necessary: painting... the walls! (in my new home ;)) I will be moving sometime
in January so I will be very busy between my day job, packing stuff, and working on
several freelance projects. Hopefully I will find time to contribute to this jam as often as
possible since it's practically my field (I am in US now but I grow up reading Italian and
other European comics). Not so much time to draw in the last couple of days, as I said,
so my first post have to be something I drew very recently (2 weeks ago) but that fits
the monthly topic, since is based on the Metabarons books from Alejandro Jodorosky &
Juan Jimenez and published by Humanoids Pubblishing, french company that publishes
the famous magazine Metal Hurlant, that inspired the american version Heavy Metal.

Enjoy and again, happy 2005 :)

Francesco

Great Metabaron, Franceso, I'm planning to do one myself. And the Corto Maltese movie actually premiered in 2002, I haven't seen it complete, just some bits, and it combines 2D characters with 3D backgrounds, and the art as far as I remember is good and I guess as close as they could to Pratt's...

I LOVE this Jam subject...! I really enjoy the comics that come out of Europe, so much more than the majority of the books being done here in the States. I love the variety of subjects, genres and styles that are on display across the "pond"-- it's absolutely amazing. And the talent of the artists in Europe is really unmatched anywhere. I was lucky enough to take a trip to France back in 2000 and brought back as many albums as I could carry (it almost broke my shoulder.... I should have had them shipped...) so, I've got a lot of ammunition for this thread....!

But I'll start off with a character that's actually been translated over here already-- BLACKSAD. I guess since I love anthropomorphic characters so much. And what an incredibly artist Juanjo Guarnido is....!

You've all done incredible illustrations already-- I'm thrilled to add to this thread. I'll be back for several helpings on this one! :D

VERY nice stuff. But then I'm a sucker for anything Ringo. I'll have to refresh myself on some european toonage and try my hand myself.

Sam - I already commented on this Tank Girl in the Girls section, so I'll just say "cool"; ricochet1980 - Great Dan Dare. I've got some of the old Frank Hampson strips collections around somewhere (and I've noticed recently that they are being re-printed for those who want to check them out), so I may have a pop at Mr Dare or some of the other characters. And, Yes, Grant Morrison did write a sort of final dan dare story (illustrated by Rian Hughes) in the late '80s; Sobreiro - I can see the Pratt style coming through in your Corto maltese illustration - excellent work; TheRonin - awesome Metabarrons pic although, I have to confess, it's another that i've never read; Arnaud Hilmarcher - Those characters look pretty good. Who are they?; Wieringo - Yes! I love Blacksad, and you've done him proud with this superb rendition.

A quick sketch of Drago from Dufaux and Marini's Raptors (or Rapaces, I think, as it was originally called). Yes, he is a vampire:

Here's another sketch of a favorite of mine--

Orane and friend from the French series of albums "LES LUMIERES DE L'AMALOU" (The Lights of L'Amalou) by Claire Wendling (artist) and Christophe Gebelin (writer).

You can check out Wendling's incredible art at her site: http://www.claire-wendling.net/

Here's my contribution to this fine thread. I'm a big fan of the Asterix comics, by Goscinni and Uderzo, so here is an original character, Solliloquix, the magical bard.

BTW, great work, everyone! I hope a lot more people participate in this thread. It makes me want to learn more, and I always LOVE that!

yes! first post of the year!!

em...: not familiar with that bloke, but i have to say this portrait is one of my favaorite from you! great feel, and full of personality specialy the eyes. the colour theme works perfectly to frme him. nice lighting "a la" euan!
sam: hourray for tank girl! and all the ingredients are present in this pic. lovely!
ricochet1980: a just tribute to this hero from the fifties! nice comp and framing. i have to say that personnaly, i prefer the earlier version, with his zigzagy eyebrows and lighter hair. i discovered this comic quite rescently, but i love the drawings by frank hampson...and the text are hilarious (cheesy now, but great). here's link to that for those intersted:http://www.dandare.org/index.htm
Sobreiro: this version is simply amazing, felipe! the sketchy approach is a nice tribute to the original...and makes him even more "alive".
TheRonin: damn, francesco, you're going for the full poster! real nice execution!
didn't read much of those myself, but the story seems interesting. great pose and costume!
Arnaud Hilmarcher: spirou! de la bonne tradition francaise! funny pics, arnaud.
Wieringo: lovely blacksad! excellent execition....damn! you've got your way qith hands!
love the pic of " lumiere d'amalou" too. one of my favorite french comic. the comp is gorgeous!
em...: rodolphe introduced me to that comic...and it's a bery good one.
yet another successful portrait from you...the expression is spot on!
Gunderstorm: ha!! bilal! never quite like the comics myself....( if i were to be honest). real nice drawing nonetheless.
Kwiecien: what would be europeen comics without asterix and obelix!?
nice drawing of this "gaulois" version....of you?

here's some of the 2000ad world, might be a bit more familiar for the lot of you.

Good stuff from everyone so far! My favorites are Gunderstorm's Horus (very art deco-ish, I like that), Sobreiro's Corto Maltese (bacan?simo, viejo) and Sam's Tank Girl.

I agree with Wieringo, Claire Wendling's art is amazing.

Here's three random kids from Carlos Gimenez' semi-autobiographical series PARACUELLOS, a devastating and raw look at the orphanages that were run in Spain during the Civil War (it inspired Guillermo Del Toro's THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, to the point that Gimenez was hired to do the storyboards.)
