Katamari Damacy for PS2 - you've GOT to try it!

Postby walrus » Mon Oct 04, 2004 8:13 am

Well, you don't HAVE to try it, but you might be very happy that you did. This is my new favorite game, and it's a blast. It's also one of the wachiest, most original things i've seen in years.

The King of the Cosmos has broken all of the stars (oops) so he assigns you - the3 prince - the job of making all new ones out of random junk found on Earth. So you have this ball you roll around - your katamari - and as you run over things, they stick to it. Your katamiri gets bigger and bigger and can pick up more stuff the bigger it gets. You start out really small in each level, mere inches tall, able to pick up only miniscule items like pushpins and cons and ants and the like. But the more stuff you glom onto, the bigger you get, which in turn enables you to pick up larger items. This accellerates the further you get into the levels.

You have to avoid bumping into living creatures, because they'll make stuff fall off of your katamiri. In the start, you might be really scared of small mice. But after a few minutes, you're scooping up mice no problem and those cats - formerly huge compared to you, are now starting to look pretty tempting. 5 minutes later, humans will be fleeing in terror from your 2 meter wide katamari! Muahahahaha! There is just nothing cooler than the feeling of getting bigger and bigger, going from really teensy to taking out entire villages in the space of 15 minutes.

The candyish graphics, the wonderfully quirky music, the offbeat dialogue, it's all wonderful, in a strange Japanese way. And there is a never-ending supply of weird junk to pick up - sushi, wind-up monkeys with cymbals, puppy dogs, musicians with huge afros, the Loch Ness Monster, school children, guys in cow suits, shrubbery, it's all there and if you're big enogh, you can grab it all!

Oh yeah, and the controls are so simple, anyone can pick it up and be playing in a few minutes. My wife - who doesn't play games at all, aside from Animal Crossing - was at it in no time flat.

And on top of all of this bizarre goodness, there's the price-tag: A mere 20 bucks!
How can you go wrong? Not that big an investment: If it at all sounds intriguing, check it out!

here you are, small in the start of a level:

slightly further along, about to glom onto some slippers on the left there:

much later, grabbing entire chunks of the town!

Ah! Ya beat me to it, Mike ^_^ This IS one of the best games i have EVER played.... and now i'll have to finally break down and get a stupid PS2 :) Yeah... it's THAT good; i'd actually buy a new system just so i can play this game.

It was a real pain in the ass finding a copy of KD: most stores didn't order very many, and the bigger stores don't even carry it! ( Toys R Us; Amazon.com ) EB Games is the way to go, though. 'Related reading; Gamespot article:
http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/puzzle/kata ... 09142.html

Another cool game feature: as you roll these huge balls of random crap from earth, you start to catalog all your findings. 'Collecitng all the items becomes sort of a side-quest... of course, some things are rare-er than others. I'd imagine finding EVERY object/person/animal/building/fixture/plant/etc/etc/etc would be an enormous challenge. If you obsess over collecting things ( Animal Crossing fans? ), this is yet another really fun part of this game.

Also, Katamari's soundtrack rocks. Listen:

You're really missing out, if you don't at least give this game a try. It's genious; addicting and weird as hell! 'My new favorite game.

Who cares about San Andreas and stupid Halo 2 :P

I'm tellin' you: it's all about Katamari Damacy!!!
-Sue /:)

PS: BTW, Mike: how did you do on the Bear level? "AHHHH!!! BEEEEAAAARRR!!!" ... haha, i kept hitting *little*, pathetic bears.

Ah, not surprised to see your post, Sue, this really seemed like one of those things that you'd be into, too! :-)

For those who haven't played, there are some levels in which all you have to do is roll over ONE object, like a bear, and it's all over. The hard part - really hard! - is getting large enough to get a big bear without accidentally hitting the hundreds of small, pathetic bears in the level.
...
I think my current "record" is a small teddy bear. :-(
I've done slightly better in the cow level - managed to get a guy in a cow suit, which is at least somewhat large-ish.

Sue, have you managed to find many (or any?) of the King's presents? I found a Crown which I now wear around in the Corona Borealis level, and my wife found a scarf in the 2nd Star level. I know that in the 6th star level it's one of those things falling from the sky up on the hill by the entrance to the scollyard, but i haven't been able to get the p[resent and finish the level.

This game is all kinds of weird, but it's also somehow loads of fun. The name literally translates to "Spirit Lump"...

The fact that it was featured in Penny Arcade is enough for me to at least consider renting it. :)

This is one of the weirdest and most fun games I've played since maybe...I don't know...Parappa the Rapper. It is just complete insanity and ridiculously addictive. I had to take a break from it since these 3D games make me nauseous (stupid brain).

For those having trouble finding it in LA, the Burbank Best Buy had a stack of them. Of course, they were all in the back room for some dumb reason.

Managed to find a copy at my local EBgames and played it with my GF last night. The things the japanese come up with these days. The gamespot review was spot on by calling the game more of a toy than an actual video game. Brilliant stuff. Thanks for the suggesting it Walrus!

Hey, no problem, always happy to pass on a wonderful game to folks... especially one like this that is so under-the-radar that many would have otherwise passed on it!

EB seems to be shelving it now as BD noted. I've also seen it at Frys Electronics-- It retails for USD20, so there's no excuse not to try it!

(My son won't let me play it-- the hog!)

Bless those Japanese! They make the greatest stuff.
This goes on the top shelf along with Devil Dice, Bombastic, Magic Pengel, and Stretch Panic.

I admit I'm jumping on the Katamari bandwagon way late. I picked up the sequel, "We Heart Katamari" yesterday, and it's probably one of the most downright fun games I've ever played. I don't think it's all that much different from the original, just more levels and more weird humor and a bunch of different "cousins" that you can snag in the levels and switch between. But damn, this game is ridiculously entertaining.

I've only ever played We Love, but I'm in love.

I love when you make the cousins follow you around, and then smash into them. The unwinnable minigame when you lose is hilarious, too. Plus, watching a really amazing Katamari take form is a pretty big kick.

I'm convinced that if you're good enough, you can actually roll up the King of the Cosmos in the bird level. Once you zoom out enough (around 1200+ meters), you see him walking/floating around. I think he can be nabbed if you can get big enough fast enough.
