Adrian Tomine's Scrapbook - WOW!!

Postby jakob westman » Fri Sep 03, 2004 2:22 pm

It's been out a while already but I just picked up Adrian Tomine's Scrapbook (Uncollected Work: 1990-2004) and it's beautiful. I can't even begin to say how much I like this stuff. There's this section in particular, it's called "Illustrations" and it's over 60 pages worth of full-color pics (the book is a good 200 pages in total). His sense of layout, design and color blow me away. It's really something else.

If you like Dan Clowes, Chris Ware or Charles Burns. Check this out, you won't be disappointed.

I agree Scrapbook is beautiful, but I decided to....postpone picking it up for the time being. I'm a big fan of Clowes and I'd prefer associating his style to him alone. Just a personal preference. Kinda like Mignola and those who are good at mimicking his style. They're good no doubt, but I'd rather buy the original. Know what I'm saying?

Tomine's the better colorist though :D

I'd add Seth to that list above. Clyde Fans Book 1 is great (assuming you like the style and type of storytelling by the other artists like Ware and Clowes).

I'm not even trying.....

Comparison in terms of line in his sequentials to Clowe's is close enough to suggest influence. Of course, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Bruce Timm and Darwyn Cooke's acknowledged influence by Kirby, Wood, etc. are examples. And I consider myself a fan of these two talented artists.

I'm not critiqueing or arguing Tomine's own style (however influenced by other artists) and talent which he obviously has in spades. It's just my own personal preference to stick to the artist (in this case) who I associate with a specific drawing and storytelling style.
