Thanks everybody :D
Ken--the color is color pencil. Many many years ago, just after I got out of high school in fact, I found out about Bill Nelson, an illustrator who works almost exclusively in color pencil, and was really inspired by the versatility he found in the medium. My later discovery of Carter Goodrich really hooked me on color pencil.
I've posted comic pages from various of my stories with my characters on this thread
http://www.sketchbooksessions.com/thedrawingboard/viewtopic.php?t=20548
These are mostly fragments which broke down because I follow the undisciplined but hugely fun system of writing a little, then drawing a little, then writing...and what happens is the whole story takes a sudden right turn out of my control. My plan is to go back to them and finish them at last, AFTER I finish a four page story due to the publisher the end of September.

Yukon--I appreciate the smurf allusion, because Euro-comics were an inspiration for these pix, especially Plessix's WIND IN THE WILLOWS adaptation, Loisel's PETER PAN, and I'd include from the states P.Craig Russell's FAIRY-TALES OF OSCAR WILDE, but for me it starts with ASTERIX and SMURFS.

I took a break from this short story comic project I'm working on to sketch a few more Hobbity things.
2 panels for THE HOBBIT comic, imagine them as side by side on the page, my scanner's not big enough for me to place them like that

Eowyn, Theoden, and Wormtongue

The previous three, Gandalf and Saruman, to work out drawing two similar-looking characters and still make them distinguishable from each other

Cory!!!
I know you in RL! I am a friend of the Rubenfelds! I'm in the Comic Art show book that's coming up.

These are fun takes on tolkien, but every time I see your hobbits, I hear the peanuts music.

It would be a huge undertaking to do The Lord of the Rings trillogy.
Good luck if the urge hits you for more than a few months every year! :)

Yo, Dave!
Peanuts music?
Rubenfeld's comic is the very project I was referring to. Pages 1 and 2 are inked, just finished pencilling 3 and 4 ealier this evening.
I started this most recent Tolkien work--the color pencil pieces are real old, actually--because of a discussion I had with my wife. Honestly, it was less a discussion and more me going on a tirade about some of Jackson's more egregious excesses in adapting the books for his movies. I ended it with this:
"It's been 30 years since Bakshi's movie, now this thing (Jackson's LOTR) will be seen as definitive, so it'll probably be another 30 years before someone tries a DECENT adaptation!"
Verna replies,"So why don't you do it?"
As I sputter, she just smiles and says:
"So take 30 years!"
Allowing myself 30 years does make it seem like less of an under-taking :D

Glad you like Albert! :D
Here's a kind of a Gollum pic, drawn shortly afterTWO TOWERS--the movie, that is--came out, and right after I got the LILO&STITCH dvd
Image
Whoops, clearly this is not a Gollum pic, afraid I screwed up in uploading new images to my site, probably used the name 'hobbits53' twice, and so over-wrote the original image, which was a pic of Gollum from 'TOWERS, Stitch, and Yoda, which I no longer have. oh well.

Busily designing Hobbiton, and exterior and interior of Bag-end, TRYING to avoid influence of Lee and Howe's designs for the movie, God they were great, the first couple times I saw FOTR I was in tears, the Shire looked so right. I also liked the way Jackson shot Gandalf's and Bilbo's first encounter in the movie, I'm sure it was meant to recall their meeting at the beginning of THE HOBBIT.
In the meantime, here's recent brush and ink practice...

Holy shit thats a lot of LOTR!!! Like I said before, your style is amazing. I dont think ill ever get tired of looking at it. One thing i liked as I scrolled through was yhour nice little nudity warning....lol. That almost saved my eyes, except for how sudden the picture was (kidding). I dont know if youve ever published any of your work, but I think it could sell if it wasnt for those evil things called copywrited material. Your style is just so unique and interesting...I would definitely like to see a comic with it or something. Good luck on keeping your style free of the movie's bias, I agree that they did a perfect job on getting lots of those environments correct (they absolutely NAILED Hobbiton and that villaige near the Shire whose name for some reason escapes me)

Thanks again, Steel! I had a couple short stories published by CALIBER COMICS many, many years ago. um, they don't get shown-- a mite embarrassed by 'em--but here're some original stories/fragments I posted in COMICS,STORYBOARDS, LAYOUTS a while ago
Image
first page of a much longer epic fantasy parody ya-da ya-da...only page so far completed.

first three pages of a not quite so epic fantasy, but pretentious as hell--I wanted it to read like Gaiman and look like a kind of Kaluta/Wrightson/Jones/Maroto mish-mash. oh well, Steve Lieber and Mike Kaluta both indicated they really wanted to see what happens next when I showed it to them. With the recent completion of a four pager for publication this Hobbit stuff gets a bit back-burnered while I more fully develop this and other story ideas for self-publication.

An actual FINISHED story, meant to be published in an anthology, but too many of the other artists involved flaked, so the publisher closed the project
