Entertainment Weekly "100 greatest videogames"

Postby iamweasel1999 » Mon May 05, 2003 5:07 pm

I'm not sure if this is even worth bringing up, becuase I dont put a lot of stock in these kinds of lists, but, did anyone happen to catch this?

I normally dont even look at ET but my mom has a subscription, and I saw the issue sitting on the couch today and decided to take a peek. I didnt find too many surprises, frankly, except for one glaring omission: no super mario brothers! Okay, Mario 64 is on the list, but, that hardly counts, heh. Here is the top 10 if anyones interested...

1: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
2: Doom
3: Tetris
4: Grand Theft Auto III
5: Madden 2003
6: Half-Life
7: The Sims
8: Super Mario 64
9: Starcraft
10: Street Fighter II

I'd have put Resident Evil, Phantasy Star (the 4 original ones) , Chrono Trigger and Stryder in there. But that's just me.

Edited by: MartinRedmond at: 5/6/03 2:09:30 pm

Too many new games in the top ten. My top ten wouldn't even break into the 90s, although I do love a lot of the modern games.

R.

Too many sequels !

I think if the greatest games was defined as something that anyone of anyage and skill could pick up and play, it would have to be Tetris, in my opinion . Simple design, classic gameplay. Timeless stuff.

GTA3 as good as it was, was an update of two previous games, so all the hard work in game design had already been done. It was just bigger and better than the previous two versions. The basics were still the same, great game though.

Madden 2003 over Super Mario 64 is just plain stupid.

Tempest, Outrun, Virtua Fighter...Gauntlet, for crying out loud!

90s, although I do love a lot of the modern games>>>

Agreed. On the list as a whole there seemed to be a lack of NES games, which I actually did find pretty surprising in retrospect, considering the impact the NES had on video games as a whole. I at least expected to see SMB 1, 2 or 3, and the original Metroid or Legend of Zelda. A few really old games did make the list though, like Donkey Kong, Mrs Pac Man, and Asteroids.
-Keith

I have to completely disagree with the comments that GTA3 is just an update of the preview GTA games. It was a complete rethinking of the whole franchise, and introduced a whole new style of gameplay and was probably the most innovative game to come out at the time.

I don't see why anyone even bothers to put together these lists as anything more than a conversation piece, because like every other one, the movies, music, actors etc. people always bitch because it doesn't match their own mental lists exactly.

Patrick, my argument was that the basic play mechanics had allready gone through 2 updates. They knew the concept would work, and work well, but all the hard work in originating the "idea" had been done with the first one. Coming up with an original, working, concept in the first place is surely one of the hardest parts of any design?

Its just a personal opinion, nothing more. I think GTA3 is one of the best games of the last 2-3 years.
