I liked it, mostly

I just saw it recently, myself and I thought it was pretty meaty and arty, for a summer movie. I felt for poor Ang Lee and James Shamus, trying to do something interesting with the deeply stupid source material. Hopefully, Lee will never be suckered into doing a "comic book movie" again, and he will use the paycheck from this one to doing far more interesting and thoughtful movies.

Meaty and arty? Deep? Do any of you people even see arty movies? This movie was made so 14-year olds could grasp it, there was nothing deep or arty involved. It looked like a music video but was as slow as rock. What a piece of shit...for the record, Rick, I found TITANIC 10 times more interesting than this sop

Oh boys what a piece of crap! This movie was soooo long and soooo boring. The hulk looked like he was made of clay, the animation was often ridiculous the pseudo pshycho-analysis overall feel was totally uninteresting. I just can't believe this is the same director who made "Hidden dragon crouching tiger". there isnt any trace of the grace of this movie in Hulk.
I prefer the Green giant commercials.

It was a painful, dark story of fathers and the effects their rage and/or emotional distance have on their children. No, it wasn't a "great" movie, nor probably even a "good" one, but considering the source material, it was still a lot better than I had a right to expect.

Well, I wasn't trying to be rude to you personally, more so to the film. it's been getting all of this publicity about being an 'action drama' but it's just a big hoaky cheese-fest. Nick Nolte is just too over the top and clownish to be taken seriously in this movie, and that completely detsoyed the whole 'father-son' mumbo jumbo that yes, does have a place in the comic books, but no, shouldn't have had such an impact on the hulk's origin. I really don't get why everybody would expect a dumb movie from the Hulk...the comic book isn't a dumb comic book by any means. Sure, it's had some bad arcs over the years, but every book has to depend on its creators for intelligence. There could have been some really good stuff done with the internal struggle inside banner's head, but they didn't really even get into it

Classic Hulk artist Herb Trimpe sez:

Postby CallMeSven » Mon Jul 14, 2003 6:48 am

Here's what longtime Hulk artist Herb Trimbe thought;

I thought it was an okay movie at first. Enlargement with rage was not one of my favorite gimmicks, and the father thing was good and went a little too far, but it had somewhat the feel of the early HULK. What I mean is, the HULK was a misunderstood character to some degree because of his plight, and several things were used that reminded me of the original HULK. And after all, they didn?t toy with the original idea any more than some of the nonsensical versions of the HULK that came from the source itself, Marvel Comics. I first thought they did about as good a job as you could with such a ridiculous idea to begin with. I mean, how do you sell to a general audience the notion of a human being turning into a green giant the size of Mighty Joe Young. A lot of the movie was spent explaining how this would come about. Hence, the inordinate amount of psycho-babble, cause-and-effect and so on, trying to make the notion reasonable. Still, I thought the movie was worth seeing. As time went on, however, and audiences failed to pack the theaters, I began to change my view. I realized that the movie makers blew it.

First, back in the day, the HULK is, or I should say was not a creature of violence. A short fuse for sure, but he was perfectly willing to live and let live, if people would just leave him alone. He responded to attacks or threats by other people, and the movie, although basically sticking to this theme, didn?t make that clear. It?s important to make the HULK a sympathetic character. Second, the HULK was a defender of the weak and the helpless. The blind, the lame, the minorities, the children of the world, even animals. This is where they lost an entire cross-section of the viewing population. I know a woman who had to take her kid home because the HULK scared him so bad. She wanted me to write a note to him and explain that the HULK wasn?t all bad. In the early HULK stories, kid characters were used to show the HULK?s empathy with those who couldn?t defend themselves. A kid character in this movie, like in E.T. or Jurassic Park, would have added to the pathos of the original HULK stories and given the HULK something that would appeal to everyone ? vulnerability. Having the HULK shed a tear wouldn?t have hurt. Third, I thought the ending was okay, but better to have the HULK in chains (titanium steel with a custom molecular structure that allows it to strengthen with stress), his survival in question because he has placed himself in harms way to protect an innocent at his own expense. Make the HULK willing to sacrifice himself to save the helpless. Just as Banner and the rest of us have a bit of the HULK inside us, the HULK also has a bit of the human in him.

Then again, nobody asked me.

HERB TRIMPE.

More interesting interview at: www.adelaidecomicsandbook...trimpe.htm
