aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=15158

Who is Mr Fantastic? Silly Wabbit, it has to be that dreamboat George Clooney!
Harry here... As X2 passes $100 million today, Fox has... well, frankly they've seen the light as the Marvel Age of Cinema has firmly grasped hold in Hollywood. The next big Marvel Property that Fox is going to get moving on is the FANTASTIC FOUR, the one that started it all for Marvel Comics, and a film that fans have been dreaming decades for. The key to the property is nailing Reed Richards and right now while Mark Frost tunes up what is allegedly going to be THE draft of FANTASTIC FOUR that gets to the screen on Novermber 4th, 2004 (according to SuperHeroHype's reporting of the 1st Quarter Marvel Enterprises Earnings Conference Call today)... well right now... as in RIGHT NOW... Fox is in deadly serious talks with George Clooney to play Reed Richards.
Why?
Cuz, Avi Arad wants Clooney to be Reed Richards, and right now... what Avi wants, Avi gets and the word I'm hearing is that George is going to do it. You see, Avi wanted George for two different Marvel Characters... Reed Richards aka Mr Fantastic and... NICK FURY, AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D. George passed on that project because he was more into doing the Steranko cool as all fuck Nick Fury of the 60's and not the Ultra Violent Modern Take that they are apparently developing. PERSONALLY... GEORGE CLOONEY IS RIGHT! Ahem...
Ok, so we're not going to get George as Nick Fury, but we are going to get him as Mr Fantastic. SO... Now we have George as Reed... Who can we see as the others? PERSONALLY, since it seems Peyton Reed is going to be the director, I'd cast Renee Zellwegger as Sue Storm, get Matt Damon as Johnny Storm and cast John C Reilly as Ben Grimm. Ahem... But that's just me.
If Fox and Marvel are aiming for a November 4th, 2004 release date for FANTASTIC FOUR, that means they're going to want to get shooting no later than about October, cuz that's one helluva active post-production on that film... Of course, if it looks like the production is going to be pushed later... they could always open on JULY 4TH the following year, of course opening on a Monday is just... kinda weird...

Yeah, I can see that. If he doesn't act like George Clooney, which he's only done once to great effect (in Oh Brother Where Art Thou).

R.

There was a time, when they were still married, that I thought Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan would have been the perfect Reed Richards and Sue Storm, don't know if they'd still work, but it would have been a great gimmick and way to publicize the movie at the time. It seems like, of all the superhero movies, this could be the most marketable to different age groups, and a wider audience. The whole idea of the family aspect, and different personalities is so appealing that, if it's done right it could be huge.

Peter Wyngarde for Doctor Doom! Anyone remember "Klytus" from that Flash Gordon movie??

Hope they go for the Kirby look, all that chunky, clunky technology.

Clooney would be good casting, if he can bring over the studious scientist part of the character. I allways wanted to see George take on a role like "The Spirit", he has the perfect look for those 40's-50's style characters.

This film could be incredibly cool..or not.

Edited by: RandyPanTheGoatBoy at: 5/11/03 12:10:54 pm

I guarantee you that while Mister Fantastic looks great on the printed page, it's going to be an ENORMOUS pill to swallow in a live-action movie. The first time Gorgeous George turns to rubber the audience is going to laugh themselves silly. An unkown actor might work better, but I still think it's going to stretch credibility (Hah! Geddit? Geddit?) to the breaking point.

Clooney does look the part for Reed Richards, though. If I recall he even had grey temples in Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind.

I'd want the FF movie to be a 1960's period piece complete with groovy go-go pop art design, but it'll never happen.
-C

www.cameron-stewart.com

Obviously, that's a big pre-production factor for any high concept movie, especially superhero movies. If you saw any of the Corman version of the FF, all the Reed Richards effects were pretty damn funny, but you'll have a prepped audience thanks to what is sure to be a blizzard of an ad campaign. We'll probably see every shot of Reed stretching his limbs and neck in the trailers plus the obligatory genetalia joke. Dick jokes will save the day.

R.

You know, I had never even thought about that, the whole look of Reed stretching on screen, it would look kind of silly wouldn't it, especially if it was an actor that were were already used to seeing.

They'd be smart to have that character play it straight though, and be the scientist first, and the hero second, and when he finally did use his abilities, do it in a subtle way, and not make him into The Plastic Man.

I agree though, that it should be done in that 60's style of film, with all the crazy clothes and colors, and just the innocence compared to the current times.

I agree that a 60's period piece would be very very cool. If they decide not to go that way though, the least I can hope for is that they leave the FF logo treatment the same as it was on the original covers of the books. I've always loved the design of it even if it is a little kitschy today.

I'm skeptical about Clooney playing a deep thinking scientist. He seems too much the action hero type(i.e. Nick Fury).
