Re: response about matrix

I think that The Matrix is a very what-you-see-is-what-you-get movie (sort of bizarre since part of its very premise is that reality isn't what you think it is). A bit short on the symbolism and metaphor, a little shallow, but overall pretty good solid fun, and a film I can't help but enjoy, and shake like a spazzy child at the thought of two sequels this year. Y'know, it's not particularly chewy, but it's very tasty.

I thought Dark City really didn't have much of its own identity. With all the borrowing from Metropolis, Hellraiser, Blade Runner etc. I couldn't really figure out what it had to say that was unique and special. Again, I still dug the hell out of it, I just wasn't really satisfied by it.

In fact, there's just a whole host of recent sci-fi/stylish adventure stuff that's been coming out in the past several years that just really doesn't engage my mind, but that I still enjoy watching. I think this Underworld will almost certainly fall into the same category.

-Dan

Dark City, Matrix and Influences

Postby Kzanth » Sat May 10, 2003 8:53 pm

Underworld...honestly, my first thought was not that they were ripping off Matrix, but Blade. "Another Vampire film..."

Just to throw in my 2 cents, s'funny...I loved Dark City, and thought filmatically it was beautiful. The 'afro-mullet' was a bit dated, and I think William Hurt was miscast...

When I saw Matrix the first time, I thought something similar to what I'd thought after first seeing Robocop - this is a great comic book movie, without the comic book. Does any one else think in those terms?

I must agree with something mentioned earlier - The Matrix took it's source material, improved upon it and TREATED IT SERIOUSLY, and made a damn fine movie. Maybe I'm small minded, but Matrix, like The Invisibles comic, for me was enjoyable and made me thing about the nature of reality, even with the plot holes.

Underworld just makes me think "development executive math: hot chick + vampire = box office 'cool'"...hmph.

I thought The Matrix, at the time, was the best comic book movie ever made. And it's only right that the brothers have expanded on that notion on their website with some really fantastic comic book shorts which show other Matrix world vignettes (much like the upcoming Animatrix has done).

R.

My big problem with all these future/cyber/punk whatever films is that they are becoming more and more predictable. I really do hope that the next 2 Matrix films blow me away, loved that first one. Its just got to the point where you can predict what these films are going to do, right down to the track listing on the cd soundtrack.

One of the films from a while back which I thought did the future thing really cool, was that Wim Wenders film, Until The End Of The World. Its a love/hate thing, some people would find it incredibly boring, it had none of the "wow" stuff that you get in films like the Matrix, but some of the ideas in it were really cool. You could really sink into it. Nicely acted too. Like a sci-fi road movie. Subtle sci-fi, admittedly.

As for Underworld, it looks ok, werewolves and vampires are allways good value for money. But isn't the whole dissaffected youth, vampire goth things getting old hat too! Kate Beckinsdale is a future wife of mine though, so I suppose I will have to see it.

regards

cranky old man.

In response to the comment about these sci-fi/matrix style movies getting predictable, well, that could be said for all the genres. To me, I could care less what kind of movie I'm going to see, as long as it's well made, and keeps me entertained, and thinking the whole time. I can honestly say that unless a movie has those criteria, I don't see the point in wasting my time, and I'll go watch an old movie that I know will be good.

This train of posts leads me to (perhaps) an interesting question...who are these films made for, anyway?

I work, as probably a lot of the 'post'ers here, in animation; for the most part, the target audience is age 2-11. When I read a script, often I'll roll my eyes and go "not that tired cliche again...how predictable".

But it ain't so for the kiddies. Unless they took some film appreciation classes in kindergarten, it's all new to them.

So when we complain about, say, ANOTHER movie about vampires and werewolves, isn't it more aimed at those teens who've had little to no interest in "old" films (ie. anything made before 1990), but will think "Underworld, what a fresh idea!"

I'm sure Lucas probably justifies his lame prequels with the idea that "kids are my target audience"...not thinking about all of us who lived and breathed the first 3 and are now adults.

While all the Metaphysical "Are we in reality"-genre or "Rips in the Space Time continuum"-type movies may seem to be getting predictable to us afficianados, are movie makers aiming not for us but the uneducated masses?

And is that right?

Blade. Buffy. Bloodrayne. This is a cash cow. Vampires are staple and are a good plot basis for action movies (to producers). I think studios discovered the Home Theater buff segment of the audience. So long as it looks good and sounds good action movies like this will always be coming out, they're called benchmarks. Movie-makers aren't just targeting the youth with these films. BTW, I thought they were calling the vampires "The Lichen" in this one, which is funny because kids back in my old high school used to apathetically call this girl with really bad facial blemishes that.

12 Monkeys and Time Cop were crucial, but I'm embarressed to say that I think Somewhere in Time, despite being so close to a chick flick, had the coolest time travel gimic. But maybe that was because I used to spend so much time staring at walls, waiting for them to crack as my superpowers kicked in.
