Very nice!

however the relatively sharp edges in the hair are drawing my focus away from the face, which has a much softer texture.

I think the small, round shape of the face is hurting the likeness. I think of him as being long, thin and angular. But the rendering is very nice.

Nice rendering and good likeness but I think someting is wrong with the left cheek (too round) and the chin (too small).

My english is too poor to explain it clearly, so I hope you don't mind but I worked a (very) little bit on your drawing to show you what I mean :

Thanks everyone for the replies.

@Don: you're right. I should have made it more angular.

@ Ma?ster: dont' mind at all, on the contrary. Glad you showed me. It looks much better that way. Thanks again.

To be honest, I don't think that helped. Now it just looks like a photoshopped version of the first one.

I do think the revision is an improvement, but I would agree with Don's initial comment about Bowie being long and thin, and therefore it's still missing the target somewhat.

I do think it's an improvement.
@Don: if you hadn't seen the first one, maybe you wouldn't think of as being photoshopped.
@ Em, In that period Bowie wasn't that bony. I attached the reference pic so it's more obvious.

Thanks for your comments Both.

And thanks to She-Thing

Amazing rendering although I don't understand why you choice to make his lower jaw area almost non-existent. And adding that pointy jawbone and jutting chin wasn't the best suggestion in my humble opinion. To sum up Bowie's face I would have to say it's thin/gaunt with nice cheekbones. He's not strong in the jaw line or the chin--but they are there. :-)

Oh! And emphasize the fact he has one blue and one green eye! I've never known another human to have that but Bowie!

it's a very difficult thing to exaggerate a famous face the way people expect when the reference is from such an extreme angle.

i would recommend making some observations and exaggeration choices using other ref, from simple straight on/ three quarters/ profile angles. this way you'll have a better sense of what he looks like.

then, you can apply these exaggerations to your more extreme angle, thus caricaturing the subject and not the particular angle/ref.
