I'm sorry, Vin - it's a beautifully executed sketch, but I don't see enough Mel in it. Maybe because I'm looking for the crazed look in his mad eyes.

Vince, you know I think you're fantastic, but there's something about this one that's a bit off for me. I keep looking at it and I'm not seeing the full likeness. I think you have the chin, nose and hairline right, so it has to be the eyes that are not quite right. I wish I could give you a more concrete suggestion. Perhaps if they were a bit beader (and crazier).

Thanks Guys for the comments and crits...yeah I'm getting a mixed reaction on this. I realize there are some problems with it and hopefully I can work it out when I add some color...if not it will go to pixel heaven and back to the, ahem, drawingboard.

I'd have to agree with the guys above. Kind of like him, but kind of not like him. I can't put my finger on what's not quite working though.

I think the main problems are that it doesn't really look like mel
despite having all the individual parts of mel plus it is very
well drawn.... it is confusing to say the least

Thanks again guys for the crits...I'm really trying to figure this one out! Robin Crowley had suggested I make his chin smaller which I did on this updated sketch. It's funny though, I did a search on Gibson caricatures to see how others may have approached him and I did notice that there were a few pieces that did the same thing...in any case feedback is more than welcomed...all the best!

hmm... nope. i'd say go back to the first chin, and work the eyes more. i agree with some others who've said the eyes seem to be the problem here.

I think you almost got him... I'd say make his cheeks smaller to leave space for his big mouth area and... his chin larger. This is my opinion, (because this caricature already is looking great, I didn't have problems recognising him) but maybe you should highlight more what is big and what is small- like you did on your Ron Howard http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ha8NnpLmq80/T ... _final.jpg (which came out fantastic, of course)

I guess part of what makes it miss for me is that you've made his head narrower at the top than it is at the base - a trapezoid. I see the shape as an upside down trapezoid, instead.

Looking at the photo for awhile, I am wondering if Mel Gibson is all eyes and smile.

IMO In the drawing, his eyebrows and and hair look combined allot like a young Sean Connery, and his eyes alone look almost like Clark Gable.

Perhaps his face should be leaner.

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to comment on this. I decided to go with the sketch and add some color hoping that might adjust any problems.

Mike do you know when that reference photo was taken...I'm using something very recent and he seems to have aged a bit more from that shot.

eyes

I copied your painting and cut and pasted the eyes closer together and it seemed to help the likeness a ton. (the one to our right especially).

I think that whatever you did on the colour version has pretty much ironed out the issues - it's very much Mel Gibson now.
