really? i thought the eyes were the strongest part. he has this look he does a lot on burn notice, a little squinty while looking out the sides of his eyes like that, and that's what i was going for. oh, well.

thanx, though, for the compliments on the others.

dwayne "the rock" johnson, for wittygraphy. i was originally going to do just one of my usual pencil sketch-style thingies, but something about it just made me feel inspired to keep going with it. so i've been working on it all month, ten or fifteen minutes here, half an hour there... and there were several times when i started to feel like i had blown it, it wasn't working and i should just scrap it and start over. but i kept working it, and eventually got something i was quite happy with. except i'm not 100% committed to the background. i'm so bad at backgrounds! i'm wide open to suggestions on that.

Fantastic Rock. I really love the design of it, how the shape of his shirt echoes the shape of his head. And he looks like I described him in another thread - a face stretched over a child's kite.

I can even forgive the background.

Love the structure and design and exaggeration choices. This is one of my favorites of yours, Don. That said, I hate the rough looking airbrushy finish, and the inconsistency between the finish of the b/g and the clothes and that of the face.

thanx, guys. mike, putting a less tight finish on the clothing than on the face was kind of intentional. that is to say, it wasn't my original intention, but once i got it to this level, i decided not to tighten it up any further, to keep the focus on the face. as for the background, as i said, i'm not a huge fan of it either. i never know what to do with backgrounds. are there any tips any professional graphic artists or anyone could offer that would give me an idea of what a background is supposed to accomplish? i mean, i know the colours shouldn't overwhelm those of the central figure, but other than that, i never know what to try to accomplish with it. i literally just airbrushed a bunch of different colours all over it until i got something i didn't think was too terribly distracting.

sidney crosby, for e-caricatures.

i've been holding on to this one for a while, hoping i'd have time to tighten it up some more, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen before the end of the month, so i'm posting it as is.
