A Silent Sketch on Page 15 (Updated 03/13/2012)

Changing this thread to a consolidated thread. Used to be "Bad Wolf." The Bad Wolf picture without words still attached.

Forgot to mention this last night, since the connection was so bad.

I worked really differently on the coloring and linework on this piece. Instead of doing an "ink layer" and several color layers, I really only worked the figure on a single layer. Instead of hard edged shading, I did some really soft, low opacity shading, building up the gradations from dark to light, and adding "ink" lines only where I thought they should go once they were built up enough. The only layers were the background, gold tint on the figure, energy effects and text.

In the background, I tried using discord colors. I saw an article that em pointed to, and decided to try it.

I'd really like some feedback on this one. What worked, what didn't. Thanks!

I really like the coloring you've done here. The lighting effects are great. I think the text detracts from the piece though. It tends to dominate the image.

I have a version without the text. Does this improve it? Thanks for the comments about the colors, though. I appreciate it.

yes it does IMO - now Rose and her power are the focal point.

Yep, I prefer the "no-text version" as well.
Great illo, IMF, really like the linework and the color treatment on this :D

Cheers,
Francesco

Another vote for the text-free version. Nice piece.

Should be an interesting season with 3 different companions in the mix.

My favourite post of yours. Ever.

The colours are (to use an appropriate phrase) fantastic!

My word, I've gotten some good remarks about this one. This single layer render may be something worth pursuing further. Maybe I'll work some stuff up over the weekend.

I'm going to use this thread for all my art instead of creating new ones. Just to keep things consolidated. So, here's a new picture of my character Enigmanaut, this time with his helmet.

Going for a cell shaded, animation frame look with my Enigmanaut work. I adapted a technique from the Bad Wolf picture above to the cell shading. I drew the image, inked it and did the majority of the color work at a low resolution. Then, I increased it to a much larger resolution and redid the inking with finer, sharper lines, and touched up the color.
How do you think it looks?

That looks great - i like how the light casts a little blue on his legs/side.

Thanks. I've been working on lighting recently. Looking at Josh Middleton's work, it's hard not to want to learn more about light. I wanted to use it to sell the solidity and depth of the figure a bit.

i love this new colouring style for your work! This last image is really neat. I am not a huge fan of all of the glowing bits though, it's a bit much
