Not hugely attended, but a first class (artwork wise) jam for sure :D

troyboy: thank you :D I thought, being kinda pulp, that a cigarette would have been
nice ;) So, where is you PS? ;)
cartoonM!ke: yeah, that looks way better: glad you liked the suggestion :)
Hack: great doodle :D I agree with Euan about the Mignola feel and I love
the "fishy" mouth: reminds me of some Lovecraft's tales :D
GentleGiant: thank you :D I don't remember well when I start to push the contrasts,
but it has surely something to do with my reading Mignola's and Miller's work few years
back. BTW I see you are in Bangor, Maine: being an avid fan of Stephen King's books, it
is like I know the place even if I have never been there: I would like, one day, to visit it
though :)
Musashi: thank you, Ronald :) Love the angle and perspective of your piece (and
the contrasts too :D)
jokerman725: not bad to be a quickie :)
Elliotanimated: don't sell yourself short, Elliot: this is indeed a beautiful illo :D the
monster reminds me of the carnivorous plant form the little shop of horrors ;)

My new tribute, done last night before going to bed.

Later

Francesco

GentleGiant wrote:Joe Bun- I like the simplicity and harsh contrast. How do you do that classic dot pattern? Is it some sort of filter, or do you meticulously place each one? I feel like a fool for even asking. (I think I like it better as a black and white than as a colored piece ... it?s that dot pattern, I just love it)

Glad to hear you like my piece Giant. For the dot pattern, I just made a bunch of sheets in Photoshop. Then I just cut it to whatever shape I need for my piece.

Here's a link that I found that tells you how to do itr:

Hack - Man, the "doodles" you do on "scraps of bristol" makes me feel like a "moron". Just awesome dude (again). Very Mignola-esque.
Musashi - Is it just me or is this the rapper version of The Phantom Stranger? Stranja's in da HOUSE!! Sorry Musashi, I really did, in fact, like this alot. Nice, crisp use of shadows and highlights. :)
jokerman725 - Nice sketch. I'm seeing a lot of improvement with each post.
Elliotanimated - Okay, there's no way I'm gonna denounce your first version. I still love the multi-eyed beastie but I gotta admit, GREAT composition on this one Elliot. Lots of depth too.
TheRonin - You've totally done what I've had a REAL struggle with Francesco which is get away from the stoic, "posed" Phantom Stranger and make him more action-oriented. The short jacket works great and I love the limited panel-breaks. Really nice.

Can't say I'm overly thrilled about my entry but I gotta admit Hack, PS turned out to be a lot harder than I anticipated. I'll probably give it another try before week's out but in the meantime, here's what I was able to get done. Critiques always welcome. :)

Hey JoeBun! Thanks for the tip, I'm on it...

Francesco - Yeah, if you ever find an excuse to come to Bangor, Maine, King's house is about the only thing in town really worth seeing. As an avid reader, you might remember him describing a giant water resevoir on the crest of a hill in town, possibly in IT and the Dreamcatcher? Well that creepy bit of history is perched on the hill directly across the street from my house. I can't help but wonder about how many evil or distressing things have happened in his stories surrounding the resevoir. Like one of these days it might tip over in a heavy storm and flatten my house ....

Cheers to everyone with well wishes.
I feel compelled to point out - I don't think I am underselling myself. I'm just saying that the first one I did was shit.
I didn't at all achieve what I was after.
The crosshatching was arse-up and I hid both his arms and his legs under his coat.
I also drew him directly facing the beast so I didn't have to do any perspective there.
And it was ugly.

Franceso - as usual your image is dynamic and exciting, not unlike you I wager.
His swinging medallion gives him a pimp on the run feel.

Nightwing - interesting references there. A bit like Edward G Robinson.

Everyone else - bless your cotton socks.

Elliotanimated- thats great he's ripped of his tentacle and beating him with it
TheRonin - I notice your line is getting more and more confident something I'm struggling with) good action and spotting of blacks the titled panel just adds to it ..keep your pimp hand strong 8)
troyboy - didn't think he could work as a buff guy but now that i see it i'm a believer.. nice one

I hope it reads like he is bidding a farewell adieu, rather then knocking on the door.. kinda hard to tell from my rough drawing

Young at Art - "Cheerio" from the Phantom Stranger.
This is terrific, and a nice companion piece to Francesco's.

Well ... this is something I just threw together tonight. I'll be up front and say I took a swing to shamelessly copy the harsh contrasts of Hack and Francesco and borrowed the single color element form ElliotAnimated for a little extra something. You can probably tell I'm not confident or comfortable in this style yet, but that doesn't mean I'll give up.

That single colour element was invented by me alone and may be used by no-one else unless they pay an exhorbitant fee.

I also invented drawing naked girls.

do you have access to a paypal account so I can make us even? Dang, I'm probably going to have to take out a loan or offer myself as an indentured servant to ever pay you for all the pictures of naked women I've drawn. Would you take an I.O.U.? :P
