I don't really consider Criminal Minded to be "gangsta rap". It has the gun imagery but it's wrapped in that intellectual KRS-One stuff.

Most would consider Schooly D (from Philly) to be the proto-gangsta rapper. (Check out his songs "P.S.K." and "Gangster Boogie"...both are from '85, I think.)

Ice-T released "6 in the Mornin'", considered the first, true gangsta rap song, in '86. I'm betting this was recorded independent of what was happening in Philly. If the west coast didn't invent it, they certainly popularized it and did it best.

Criminal Minded was released after both of these

I would recommend Paul's Boutique along with Licensed to Ill. Paul's Boutique is one of the best albums, ever, period.

Awesome. Although I'm not a fan of the one giant mp3 mix thing. Wish it was separated out even if it's supposed to be a mix.

Here's a pretty sweet site for Big L fans, lots of real rarities and freestyles tucked in here, I can't recommend it enough! Just download all 4 Tommy Gibbs Collection playlists.

Lots of great West Coast gangsta shit in that one, some of it I've never heard and some of it I got rid of a long time ago and am glad to hear it again (ala Easy E and Rodney O).

Thanks Drugs for pointing this great blog out again.
