Steve Jobs and his thoughts on music

Postby tylerdurden » Tue Feb 06, 2007 6:28 pm

This is a cross-post of something I put in the Tech Forum that I also think applies here...

Considering how iconic the iPod and iTunes is these days, not to mention the large share of the legal music download market Apple iTunes Music Store has, this article, written by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc., is a very stark take on the current state of affairs on dealing with the music companies and digital rights management:

Apple - Thoughts on Music

His conclusion is actually quite astounding, considering his position in all of this.

It all should have been DRM free in the first place. But I think Apple benefited from DRM heavily when iTunes/iPod blew up and you could only play the music from iTunes on an iPod mp3 player. Now Apple Jobs wants all the non-iPod users as well.

I don't think the music owners are gonna budge on DRM. They can't get it right on CDs without screwing up everyone's PCs or having the CDs playable on all players. They're gonna hang on to the little bit of control they have. And they barely even have that with programs like Tunebite out there.
