I finally got the Mars Volta album on Sunday. It is quite amazing. I'm also amazed at the fact that I think I like it more than At The Drive In, which I have been a big fan of for a while now. It's too bad tonight's show just seemed to have jumped up me, I don't think I'll be able to make it. But I did manage to see them at one of their first shows...November 2001? It was at the Troubadour with The Anniversary, Fairweather, and Mates of State. Really good show. i remeber being amazed at the fact that they had the old keyboardist from Teenage Fanclub playing with them. The stuff they played that night sounds a lot different from what's on this album (I like the album stuff better). Mates of State really blew me away that night too. Courtney Love was there making an ass out of herself.

If I do go tonight, I'm hoping the response is better than the wide-eyed deadpan stares of the audience members at the Sparta show at the Roxy a couple months back. Even Small Brown Bike (who rocked way harder than Sparta) couldn't get those assholes to move even a little bit

Hey Drugs I was at that show in 2001 Wynona ryder was there too..and courtney was in a drunken stupor stumblingon my friend and myself.....here is my review..i did on another board..but well:

The Show....Lets start with this..I had an extra ticket..and when I called KROQ to request some Mars Volta..the phone operator said he loved the band...but to my questioning he couldnt get tix..cuz they sold out like mad in under a day...so I said yeah man you can have my extra ticket...He said he might have some pals workin that show that might get us backstage......

To the day of the Concert....7-01-03

Jim, his girl Catherine, and I leave Redlands around 4 in afternoon we get to the Henry Fonda theatre at round 5:15....we get some food..we stand in line..while the Nazi..security guards tell everyone..." I just asked..and there are no more tix for this show..the show is sold out..." alright..but then "Everyone press the line against the fence..we want single file..and you have better have zero room to move..." whatever man..so yeh KROQ guy shows up we stand and talk..he tells me how to remove Puddle of Mud from KROQ....(which is worth its weight in gold)...so round 7:30 lines start goin in..we get in...stand around and wait till like 9:00..in this time..Surge from System of a Down , Flea from Red hot Chili Peppers, shows up...and then Zach De La Rocha, shows up..he (Zach) goes for the balcony seats..yet he has trouble finding a seat...and all the while this D.J is playing some awesome records...i forget his name..but he is bad asss..so I hit the lobby to use the bathroom..go and talk to Charlotte Kay and introduce my self..I am the first one in the whole street team to actually acknowledge my self she said..so we talk for twenty minutes....I tell her I will be sending in my flyer art to have her look at and what not this friday...so 9:00 rolls around... Saul Williams Jr. comes out and reads some really tight poetry..if you ever..eveer have the chance to see this guy..do. after like 15 minutes of Poetry he leaves the stage..and then we wait a half an hour....

Then

The Mars Volta comes out......

They hit the stage like a ton of bricks breaking my windshield..matrix style sped to real time of course....
set list is as follows:
Inertiatic ESP
Roulette dares
Drunkship of lanterns
Eriatarka
Cicatriz ESP
Apparatus
televators (Cedric dedicated this one to Jeremy Ward)
Veil
Eunuchs
Concertina

I have to say man oh man...The Mars Volta friggn rock..and the sound manipulator indeed was Paul Hinojos there..but..he was off stage as Jeremy sometimes would be...I believe I saw Tony of ATDI there too....Jeremy's funeral was last week in El Paso, Texas...So I will leave you to do the math there..None the less..Cedric's voice has gotten lots better..like he can hit notes that I havent seen him hit...and of course bein the drummer for De-Facto helps when you decide to hit the cymbals in perfect timing with your Microphone..yeh Cedirc was as crazy as usual throwin the mike stand over Omar's amp and stuff..and as for Omar..gawd damn that boy he is awesome playin his riffs..its hard to think one person can write as much as Omar does....seriously if you ever have the chance or what not to go see these guys....just do yourself a favor even if you r not sure u can go and just buy yourself a ticket..chances are you will find a way to go to the show......By the way the new Bassist for Mars Volta bein Juan Alderete he absolutelty one of the best guys i have seen in a long time..he frggn pretty much took over a song with his awesome solo he did..I was really impressed. And the drummer..man oh man he was amazing ..like he had his solo as well and so did ikey on key boards..they are just friggn great.. Paul on sound Manip....was great at first I thought maybe it was recorded since Jeremy's death..but no..it was tight..like man Paul is friggn talented for knowing how to do just so many things musically...man...Yeah after an hour and a half set the show was over..The Mars Volta did Concertina as a bonus song when they came back to everyones stomping feet...S.F. didn't get treatment Cedrics voice was startin to hurt I heard..

I like Sparta better than Volta, but Volta is cool.

Jack the sound barrier. Bring the noise.

I've been listening to alot of newtome bands lately.

interpol, as mentioned before, has a really interesting sound. unfortunately, they use it in the same way in most of their songs. still cool to hear one on its own every once in a while.

trapt has got a few cool songs, 'headstrong' and 'stories' are filled with emotion, and they just make me sing along in my car- nevermind the freightened looks of other drivers.

the ghost in the shell- stand alone complex OST has a few excellent electronica ballads. very moving sounds, meditative mixed with gloom or trance. highly recommended.

lostprophets have some good songs, check with your doctor if you have heart conditions first, though. energy similar to slip-know with manic rythms like system, and creative guitar and beats.

fugees, always loved, they're classic GOOD HIP HOP

jurassic 5, feelin every song also GOOD HIP HOP

Well, since I've heard of *none* of the above mentioned artists I guess I'll have to throw out some of my own musical taste.

Tough to describe the genre, but I've heard it called Deep House, Loungy Electronica, Downtempo Techno, and many others. Its basically the more calm side of the techno/electronic beat and usually bridges into various forms of jazz, funk, and hip-hop.

Royksopp
Fragile State
Miguel Migs
Aquanote
Beautiful Six
Cassius
*pretty much anything from Naked Music
Jazzanova
Air
Kruder and Dorfmeister
Marumari
Massive Attack
Zero7
Mutiny UK
Jamiroquai
Kosheen
Hotel Costes series
Thievery Corporation
T-Love

... now to spend some time listening to others suggestions

Geezer, I'm surprised you don't have Portishead on that list! If you really haven't heard them, you'll dig'em, going from the other stuff you have on there. You'll also want to check out Tircky, Lamb, and Felt Mountain Goldfrapp album.

Oh yeah, I picked up a couple new discs this weekend. Finally got that NEW Goldfrapp album, it is fucking amazing. Alison sounds SO much sexier on this one than FM. Also got the first album from Christian hardcore metal-heads Zao, the new e.p. from so-cal indie/hardcore band The Kinison (produced by Casey Chaos from Amen!), and FINALLY found a coupy of Endtroducing by DJ Shadow used. Mr. Shadow really blows me away, ESPECIALLY after having watched SCRATCH for the first time last week.

AFI is really cool, and getting better I think, as they get more into the whole gothic intrumental type thing. it will be neat to see how experimental they get with the layers and electronics as the years go by and they get more and more bored and frustrated with punk rock.

I went to Aaron's records and pciked up some great cds for real cheap: Kyuss "blues for the red sun", Lard (basically Ministry with jello biafro on vox and al playing guitar), Converge (the new one, can't remember the anme right now), Spiritulized "lades and gentlemen we are floating in space" and Ohgr's first solo effort.

Also has anyone heard of UGLY DUCKLINGS and their album MEAT SHAKE? They were playing this in Aaron's and it is some of the most delightfully irreverent and funny hip hop I have ever heard. i didn't think to ask who it was that was playing, but then about an hour later i was in Fat Beats on melrose and saw it on the shelf. Unfortunately they only had it on vinyl, but I must get this album on cd asap
