I was thinking they'd do this when the Baz Lurmann film came out.

We could be watching the same thing the old man went thru when he was Oskars age.


I walked away from the movie thinking the same thing. The novel, however, tells a different story. Spoiler below...

I'm in the middle of the book right now and Hakan's pedophilia is quite a gigantic subplot and a very central idea in his relationship with Eli. And it's amazing that leaving this huge detail out for the movie still works. krisvahl's interpretation of the events is completely plausible for the movie. Hakan's still an incredibly sad character (even more so) but not nearly as sympathetic as the movie version.
