The only thing that really pissed me off about the movie was the....'Based on the Graphic Novel'.

Excuse me, but I thought it was a fooking 'comic book'.

Well, it was better than the first Tomb Raider and Batman And Robin. That's not really saying much though.
Despite Captain Nemo's advanced technology, the "automobile" (as Nemo calls it) in 1899 still bugged me. Quartermain later calls it a "car" even though he's never seen one before. Sawyer automatically knows how to drive like Mario Andretti just by taking the wheel and offering to go for a "spin".
I agree with Hellboy that Nemo and the Nautilus were really cool. The Nautilus, despite it's vastness, can apparently fit down the narrow canals of Venice though.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published in 1876. In the preface, Twain says the period of the story was "thiry or forty years ago" (1836 or 1846).
So if Tom Sawyer is around in 1899, he should be in his 50's or 60's. And he indeed proved to be a pointless character in the film.
I don't think I spoiled anything for anyone who hasn't seen it. It has it's entertaining moments, but if you're going in expecting the book, you will be disappointed. If you're going to the theater anyway, do yourself a favor and go see Pirates of the Carribean.

Edited by: Animal Qwacker at: 7/14/03 10:18 am

saw this last night and pretty much agree with HellboyOne on his assessment. This is basically a total mess of a film, but it does have some strangely appealing elements.

I thought nemo and the nautilus kicked ass.

skinner was fun, but it would have been more fun if he was invisible more of the time and throwing out comments randomly. i never like it when the invisible guy makes himself visible all the time.

hyde was kewl except for his rubbery skin ... could have improved that a bit.

Saw it today and really enjoyed it. I knew it wasn't going to be anything like the comics...so had pretty much gone in with the attitude that it's a film based on the idea of rather than the actual comics.
Anyhoo...i thought it payed more homage to the actual style of the original stories...especially Quartermain. What with the rollicking ballyhoo of a jolly good old adventure.
My girlfriend whispered in my ear during the venice scenes that the Nautilus must have a bloody good turning circle.

I dug it. Yes there were plotholes, cheesy dialogues and some quite silly moments but all in all a fun film. I don't think it tried to take itself too seriously which could have been a nasty downfall. I honestly think it's testemant to the original characters and their strengths that even if they are tweeked slightly...played around with...they are still fascinating and great to know.
Dorian Gray was the highlight for me. The fight scene in his library...where he was calmly, brutally stalking through the bad guys picking them off was great.
