Two words, one hyphenated: Transformers live-action!

Yep, sorry...this is my geek moment (aside from that Hellboy idiot). I'm officially in my own 9 year-old heaven.

R.
-------

'Transformers' Rolling Out in Live-Action Film
Wed Jun 11, 1:54 AM ET

By Chris Gardner

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "The Transformers" -- the ever-morphing Hasbro toy line that spawned comic books, TV series and an animated feature -- are ready to change shape again, this time into live-action stars of the big screen.

Angry Films chief Don Murphy (whose next film is "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen") and writer-producer Tom DeSanto ("X-Men" and "X2: X-Men United") have teamed to produce a feature-length, live-action movie based on the popular brand.

The duo are expected to shop the project to studios shortly, and DeSanto said they have already received interest from a handful of directors.

DeSanto is currently working on a story treatment for the project before he and Murphy hire a screenwriter to adapt it for the big screen.

"Transformers enjoys an amazing fan base worldwide, and we believe that we can create an incredibly fast-paced, exciting movie that will be appealing to anyone who loves action films," Murphy said in a statement.

Added DeSanto: "Transformers is one of the properties I have been infatuated with for a long time. Like 'X-Men,' Transformers offers an amazing mythology with all the elements to create a successful ongoing franchise, iconic characters, global themes and a world that has never been seen before onscreen."

Introduced in the mid-1980s, the Transformers brand centers on a group of robots that are able to change into a variety of objects, such as cars, trucks, planes, ships and other technological creations.

The feature film will tell the story of an intergalactic war between two races of robots: the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons. When their fight comes to Earth, the future of humanity inevitably hangs in the balance.

"We loved the creative take that Tom and Don presented to us," said Jane Ritson-Parsons, president of the Hasbro Properties Group. I expect there'd be a heavier, more "industrial" transforming sound effect. Maybe different from robot to robot (for instance, lil ol' Bumblebee's transforming effect probably shouldn't sound as heavy and powerful as Prime's)

Gorilla Optimus was cool! But that was Beast Wars. A totally different Optimus. There was a lot to like about that show, lots of links to the old series. And that two-parter on the Ark, with 3D versions of Soundwave & Optimus Prime... ah...

"Die-cast construction. It's a lost art."

As long as we get to see their Cybertronian vehicle modes, too... "Transformers: The War Within" has EXCELLENT Cybertronian versions. Some, like the jets & Wheeljack & Bumblebee, are souped-up versions of the ones from the first cartoon!

Coming in 2005: "GIJoe: Saving Sgt. Slaughter"

Keith

Micronauts? Like the Marvel Micronauts? Like the total ripoff other Micronauts series out currently?

Actually, by doing a Transformers movie, you're doing a Micronauts movie, since a good portion of the Tranformers are just toys pulled from various Takara properties all branching off the Microman line (which became Micronauts over here).....

Most of the vehicles come from the Microman Diaclone line (notice the cockpits, where you could actually insert a pilot figure that was included in the japanese versions), while the weapons, like Megatron, came from the MicroChange line.....

The P38 Megatron toy is actually one of several guns with similar transformation from weapon to robot...I was always surprised that Hasbro didn't snatch up the additional designs...

What's really funny is the japanese really ate up the new packaging and concept of the Transformer toyline, with many fans buying toys they had previusly owned from the original lines.

Whoa...I totally toy geeked out there....sorry
JOELCARROLL.COM

As for the movie, well....I'm just a sucker for a robot....especially a robot movie with a decent budget.

One hope of mine would be consistant scale....I always thought it'd be neat that Megatron would only be 10 inches tall, as well as some of the other normal sized objects....
They can give Megatron a huge Napoleon complex....

Plus, the Decepticon jets could be a lot larger than the other vehicle guys.....I mean, they're like jets, right?
I never understood why Optimus and Huffer, although both semi trucks, were different sizes simply because Huffer was pulled from the cheapy MicroChange line.....

Maybe I'm really geeking out for no good reason, and should go back to lurking.....
JOELCARROLL.COM

Yes, those Micronauts, Jody. Baron Karza, Acroyear and the rest. I used to love those toys, and the comic (Michael Golden's artwork used to be great)

this VW link works!

louhi.kempele.fi/~skyostil/archive/dump/videos/VWMPG.mpg

First time I saw that VW thing a year or so back, my heart stopped. We have more in common the more you post, Toby. I, too, was a childhood klepto. My target of choice was G.I. Joe. In suburban Denver, a good winter coat can conceal 6 Joes comfortably. I'm sure my friends and I single-handedly put Woolworth's out of business that year.

One of my best memories, although it really shouldn't be, was completing my Devastator set after stealing the last of those construction robots from Target. Ahh...the fearlessness of youth. Nowadays I'm afraid to jaywalk.

R.
