Spring Break on Zion

Postby Tiramisue » Sat May 17, 2003 8:02 am

**Spoilers; beware!!**

I wanted to like it, but i didn't think it was that great a movie. It's a good special effects reel, though.

The Zion scenes were embarressing... c'mon. I wanted to beat myself over the head with the guy's laptop who sat next to me! Awful, awful, awful..NOT sexy AT ALLLL.

'Sorry but NO ONE wearing a shirt with the sleeves cut off looks badass. ;)

Jackie Chan did almost all his own stunts ( back in his day )... those were pure, artistic movies that you can truely appreciate. Eventhough they say the Matrix actors had a year of physical training prior to filming, most of those 'moves' were still done with the aid of a computer. ;) 'Just sayin'! I knew what i was getting into, here... but Keanu is NO Jackie Chan ;)

The main reason i didn't like the movie: i didn't feel a damn thing! The scenes just dragged on and on. Was there suspence? Hardly. Neo can't kill the Smiths; the Smiths can't kill Neo..SO let's show that for 4 million years. "Ok, we get it! Stalemate!" Everyone's invincible in this movie; and the one character that died... died for 2 seconds before she was brought back to life. No one had time to feel bad about anything!

I did like the motorcycle chase scene alot. The 'Key Maker' character was cool.

Some of it was real nice to watch, but would i see it again? Probably not.

Oh, and here's my own Matrix Reloaded experience: the guy who sat two rows in front of me...

What was that guy thinking?!?! And what was that girl thinking for going with that sicko!?!?! Hahaha..

-Sue :P

What was the trailer at the end I missed it????????

oh and the movie was good it could have been better, a few fight scenes were overdone and looked like video games and the reason why the story wasnt good was because all three movies are one story each seperate chapters so if you think its crappy its because its just the middle chapter so dont expect it to have a real plot. you will have to see all three of them in a row in order to like it.

I think those critical of the ending really dont get it. There is a third movie coming. Hello. At the ending they give us a new villian that looks to be the opposite of Neo and a traitor, only we know that and they dont. Very intriguing. I am looking forward to the next one big time.
I could be critical of some of the scenes, I thought the Zion scene was long and over done, some of the fight scenes were too long. I really dont understand how Neo can be superman one minute then have problems beating up a couple of clowns with swords?
The movie was a little too deep for some people, but I liked the twists and turns and thought that the ending left me hanging in a good way. It was climactic to me personally. Zion destroyed, the prophecy a lie, a traitor(Satan to God/Jesus(neo?)), Neo having powers outside the matrix, it really left me thinking and pumped for the next one. Great movie to me personally.

I understand that there's another chapter, but I still think it's stupid to just have it end like that. Back To The Future 2 did it, but it worked because the movie had the character/problem/climax/resolution format and Matrix reloaded did not. I like the idea of a trilogy, but I do not like the idea of an 7-hour long movie that's 4 hours of nothing but fighting

Warning: I've been drinking (a little post-film booze n' bitch session), so keep that in mind when you read this.

Haven't seen a film like this since Star Wars Episode 1. A film that tries to enrich and deepen its cosmology but just ends up being rubbish and fucked.

First half? Total bullshit. Everything in Zion is terrible beyond belief. I was bored and checking my watch LESS THAN AN HOUR INTO THE FILM.

It picked up a bit once they got back into the Matrix, but really the only scene that inspired any kind of interest or excitement in me was the whole freeway chase/fight. Too bad it had to be surrounded by excruciatingly terrible dialogue, overlong and pointless scenes, grade-school philosophy and boring, contrived action. It's clearly been padded out to make two films out of a script that would suffice as one.

So Reloaded sucked, and that's a fact, and anyone who says different I'll take on like Neo fighting all those clones of Agent Smith.

P.S. I love the first one.

-C

www.cameron-stewart.com

The New Yorker puts it into words better than I can:

www.newyorker.com/critics...at_atlarge

"It feels not so much like ?Matrix II? as like ?Matrix XIV??a franchise film made after a decade of increasing grosses and thinning material...For anyone who was transfixed by the first movie, watching the new one is a little like being unplugged from the Matrix: What was I experiencing all that time? Could it have been . . . all a dream?"

-C

www.cameron-stewart.com

As much as I hate to agree with the always contrary Stewart....Goddamn that movie sucked.

I dug the first movie too.
And at the end of the film Neo gets the power to manipulate the matrix. So what does he do in the new film. DOes he give all his pals powers in the matrix, does he throw fire balls, does he do anything the least bit creative?

Hell no.
"Help me Neo, my son is on board that one ship, help him."
"Hello, I'm Jesus, let's do kung fu."

Screw that movie. If you had the power of a GameShark would you just continue to do the same old stuff?

The ONLY thing that saved that movie was teh freeway chase.
Larry Fishburne was the freaking man. His suit was pimp, his style was dope, and his shoes were the most visually appealing thing in the movie.

So instead of spending more time on making Morp more of a bad ass and letting be the kung fu boss, they gotta waste time showing Stiff Ass KEanu doing more of the same laughable kungfu and NOT doing creative shiit with his powers.

What a freaking waste.
Either teh Wackowaskies can't write or come up with more than one ripped off idea, or they did have the money to do what they really wanted.

The film is kinda like this post.
All these ideas coming fast all at once and never really fleshing out any of them so the next one can get put down.

Never has so much been said about so little, or was it never has so little been said about nothing.

Screw that movie

The only thing more excruiating that the 45 minute scene in Zion was reading the New Yorker article about the Matrix Reloaded, yeesh what a tired, boring write-up. Thanks for the synopsis of the first movie, none of us have seen it....and he has the gonads to talk about the script of the movie? And Im supposed to take this guy's writing seriously? I thought the "comic book" writing swipe was offensive, I luv comics, sure some of the writing is bad, but so are most movies, Tv shows, novels, etc, theres no need to lump all comics into bad writing insults. Funny how there are a dozen comic story ripoffs in movie theatres on any given day yet the writing in comics is made fun of all the time. Hate that crap.
I do find some faults in the movie but I liked it and thought it left me waiting for the next one. Take out the boring scene in Zion or cut it down some and the movie is better but I enjoyed it overall. I liked the ending alot, major villian introduced, Neo having powers outside the matrix, I personally thought the ending was climactic, but hey I guess Im not the movie buff some of you are and dont take these things as religion, I go to be entertained for 2 hours, not to discover the meaning of life.

Yet another 2 cents..

Postby Attezarf » Sat May 17, 2003 2:50 pm

I really wanted to like this film more than I did.. However, it's not NEARLY as strong as the original. It wasn't the worst film I've ever seen, either. I think a lot of the freshness has disappeared from the concepts.. And as mentioned by others, I guess I'd hoped to see something more inventive in the areas re: Zion, etc. What do these people DO all day? Apart from rest up for their next ritual 'Rave Night' evening?

I liked some of the action sequences. Many of which went on a bit too long, for my taste. There was a sameness to them. And some of the Locations (particularly the staircase foyer lined with armour) seemed a tad contrived to me.
The much ballyhooed "burly brawl" I quite liked. I found myself really enjoying it BECAUSE it was so over-the-top & overdone! I did detect a bit of funky CG work in small moments. But I think it was saved by all of the mindnumbing Compositing work they must've gone thru with Hugo Weaving. Who's probably my favorite Matrix character to watch, actually. Anytime the guy had a line.. my interest pricked back up.

The bigger problem for me.. is this Serialization Factor that occurs in the production of multiple sequels. I realize questions will be resolved in the next.. but at the same time, I'd like to see a more-satisfying conclusion to the current.
When 'serials' were a regular feature of the filmgoing experience in the 30's & 40's.. Audiences KNEW they were gonna be left with a cliffhanger, at the end of it. So it really didn't matter.. 'Serials' were only one part of the "warmup" to the main Feature, anyhow.. They played the same role as theatrical cartoons..
But I don't think today's major motion pictures should be allowed to make one film a "warmup", for the next.. Don't leave me hanging!! It's annoying. And it bothers me that film executives have pushed so hard for these kinds of 'franchise' episodic properties. If they happen on their own.. fine. But to design them, that way? If I'd wanted to watch TV, I'd have just stayed home. I expect a little more for my money, when I go see a film..
Bad enough, I'm forced to sit thru 15 minutes of commercials, first.. Where's my remote?!

On another note.. I have to confess that Agent Smith's motivation for continuing to pursue Neo, was something of a mystery to me? He certainly didn't seem interested in attaining access codes, anymore.. Is it pure vindictiveness? Anxiety, over a job half-done?
And, I couldn't believe how poorly the Persephone character was developed. I imagine she'll be back again in 'Matrix Revolution'.. but does she need to be such a genuine throwaway character, here? Same goes, for the French guy..

Some of the problems I'd read about prior, in critical reviews tended to not be that big a prob for me, actually. I agree that this installment was a bit ponderously "wordy". Lotta big speeches made by sage actors, a la 'Star Wars: Episode 1'.. Though as someone who grew up in front of a TV during the 70's.. it was a bit of a hoot to see Anthony Zerbe, again. I think he must've played a villain in just about EVERY crime show I'd watched, during that period!
I'd also heard that because Neo has now (almost literally) become 'Superman', that he is also a lot less compelling to watch. I found that not to be the case. There was still more than enough character growth in his role, to keep me interested.. Particularly, towards the end.

Overall, I coulda done with a few less of the Set Piece fight sequences.. A better introduction as to why day-to-day life in Zion demands saving. Glad to see that sexual life still exists.. Agent Smith was fun, but his motivation was muddy.. I thought the highway chase wasn't really all that. Seems like I've seen bits of that stuff before in both 'T2' and 'Road Warrior'..
I really liked the "door" concept & The Keymaster. Would've enjoyed seeing more of that concept, explored..

I still think episodes need to hold their own.. or they shouldn't be designed as episodes. It was fun to watch. But I wish it had been better. And, more satisfying..

-- Rich

I walk in there expecting to love it, like the first movie.....but Im sorry....HATED it!

Bad points:

1)Crazy convoluted story.....most of the plot points will be whizzing over the audience's head.I bet 80% of the people didnt even get the fact that the guy on the table alongside Neo at the end is Agent Smith in a human body.

2) BAD BAD 3d digital doubles!! No suprises to those who have heard me rant about this before. It didnt work in Blade 2, Harry Potter, Episode 2, some parts in Spiderman, Two Towers, Mummy returns, etc. It's cropping more and more in each movie, and I wish they would beat the person at ILM who started this with his big fancy computer! It's painful to watch as an animator, and it brings the audience out of the scene. People were actually snickering in the theatre when the Agent lands on the hood of the car.

3) Shitty ending...it was laughable......Dun dun dunnnnnnn!!!!

However never let it be said that Im always negative. I do have some good points...:

1) A lot of really good action sequences.. I didnt paticularly enjoy the schoolyard fight scene, but the highway car chase was really well done.

2) Cool Martial Arts. Some of the sequences with Neo went on for a minute or two before cutting. It reminded me a lot of the fighting in Crouching Tiger.

3) Really interesting characters. Like the twins, the keymaster, and the french guy program. Wish they could have played with them a little more, but hey......gotta save some for the next Matrix in November, right?

I'm not going to waste my money seeing it again in theatre, but I may rent it later this year to see if the movie makes any more sense the second time around.

Lambey.

Edited by: Lambey at: 5/17/03 7:34:54 pm

ya know what pissed me off more than anything?
Having to sit through a 20 minute techno Dave Matthews song while waiting for the preview for the next film.
I thought i was gonna poke out my eyes, all that black and green.

Screaming like a moron in the back of the theatre with poked out eyes not able to see the preview, but I can still hear that hellish song.
