I think the Trinity/Neo relationship could have been done better but did you really want to see them holding hands in the park, having a candlelit dinner, writing each other love letters? The world is supposedly destroyed and they live on a ship, not much room for moonlit walks and such.
I didnt really see her character being that weak, she was more than willing to sacrifice herself for the cause and beat up a few dozen men in the movie, fought agents, dont really see how that was weak.
I agree that the "sex" scene was terribly done and completely unerotic.
The relationship between Neo and Trinity was poorly done in the first one, I thought it was worse than this one's. The previous poster that talked about them falling in love "all the sudden", hit the nail on the head. They had what one or two conversations, then all the sudden they live and die for each other and are hopelessly in love?
Then again most hollywood movies trivalize relationships and are rarely even close to realistic and really this was basically an action/sci fi movie, wasnt expecting an epic romance story in it.

We don't need to see vaseline-smeared-lens shots of the two of them being all wuvvy-duvvy with one another, but a few well-placed, well-written, well-acted (I know, I know, it's Keanu...) scenes between the two of them might have helped make their relationship - one of the MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF THE WHOLE STORY, apparently - a wee bit more convincing.

>>>I didnt really see her character being that weak, she was more than willing to sacrifice herself for the cause and beat up a few dozen men in the movie, fought agents, dont really see how that was weak.<<<

So she shoots stuff and kicks ass. W00t. So do all the other "members of the rebellion." She doesn't really have any REAL purpose, in the way that Neo or Morpheus does. In the first film she was at least second in command, with reasonable goals and responsibilities, but that's been removed and now she seems to exist as Neo's possession - something for him to protect and save from danger. He even makes her stay behind while he goes out on The Most Important Mission Ever In History To Save All Mankind. When she defies him, she fucks it up and dies and he has to rescue her.

Niobe is physically tough, as Trinity is, but her function in the screenplay is the love object caught in a tug of war between two men. She's also onscreen for about 10 minutes and relevant for far less.

Persephone is the poor, bitter wife, all busting cleavage and rubber, begging for a kiss from the Big Strong Hunk.

And then there's the nameless woman who's digitally molested and coerced into giving the Merovingian a blowjob...

I'm just sayin', is all.

-C

www.cameron-stewart.com
Edited by: CameronStewart at: 5/30/03 8:48:15 pm

I still dont see Trinity being weak. Morpheus had to be rescued in the first movie, didnt make him weak. Trinity basically did the same thing he did in the first movie, gave herself up for Neo, the Oracle's prophecy. I dont see how that was weak. Vulnerable maybe, but thats not neccesarily weak. Oh well it could have been better I guess.
Admittedly, the other female characters were terrible. I think the Morpheus/Commander/exlover triangle was just stupid and brought nothing but a character that would make a nice actioin figure into the story. I see clips of that girl in the video game commercials, etc, she really was a throwaway in the actual movie.
Ah well I enjoyed the movie overall but it was weak in some areas no question. Personally I think the whole "sunglass/leather residual self image" thing is just plain old. Everyone looks cool if they were going clubhopping, but arent they going to fight someone? Leather outfits seem to be silly, then again Daredevil wears one....

Do you think some of the problems with these films are due to the fact they were shot back-to-back? Maybe kind and cuddly Joel Silver didn't cut the Bros as much slack this time around, or maybe the W Bros just got a bit full of it. Hasn't one of them got off with some S&M freak? Suddenly the reason for all that leather in their films becomes clear.

Im off to see it today, now the rush has died down, Ive prepared myself to be dissapointed

This movie was EMPTY. there is nobody in the matrix exept the main characters and ennemies. An empty Matrix. Just like in these old Advengers episods with empty streets. Strange choice. The action scenes were tiring because they were too long. This endless car chase on the higway... not as fun as in the Blues Brothers.
That's for the weak points.
I enjoyed the" rave party "scene. It showed how people are dehumanized and forced to act collectively in Zion.It was one of my favorite scenes (I know I'm weird)There should have been more action scenes in Zion, because here the people can die. The new characters were nice (Merovingian Persephona Seraph, the architect ...) Despite of all my crits I liked this movie but not as much as the first.
