Underworld poster

Postby HellboyOne » Wed May 07, 2003 11:20 pm

You know, someday, when the Matrix stops inspiring other productions to copy it, their promo departments will also stop copying their posters.

R.

I think Alex Proyas and cinematographer Dariusz Wolski really aren't given enough credit when talking about films like the Matrix etc. Dark City and the Crow really set the pace in terms of visual style. Dark City more so in regards to The Matrix, visually and in plot.

i am down wit 'j schmo' - 'matrix' being thrown about as the starting point for all that follows is tired... the majesty of the matrix is that it was and continues to be the pinnacle of nothing wrapped in a glossy technowanker package to appeal to those loving flash over substance... which is fine as long as the audience people realize its weakness' while enjoying its strengths...

anyway, i had heard that 'underworld' was going to have a name change?

Underworld will have no name change according to darkhorizons.

As for flash-over-substance....you really think The Matrix is all flash? I think it's one of the smartest sci-fi movies to come out in years. Yes, it borrows heavily from many places. Yes, it did not innovate the look and the feel. What it did do is build on all its influences substantially and wrapped it in a cool and relevant story.

I dig The Crow and Dark City too. But they are FAR from perfect and they didn't make up the style either (these movies wouldn't exist without Terry Gilliam's or Ridley Scott's or Billy Wilder's influence). Hell, we can go all the way back to Metropolis if you want (which, by the way, is all over the Dark City dvd like it was the movie's grandpa).

I know it's kinda fun to shit on something everyone seems to love, but you MUST relent a bit on the fact that The Matrix is a damn good movie and a helluva lot of fun, jimmy. Just a little.

Hey...the Underworld poster's not showing up. a new movie by Alex Proyas??? man I got to crawl out of the hole a bit more often.

Stylistically, Dark city is above and beyond the Matrix in terms of cinematic storytelling and design, but that is mostly because the Matrix was limited in its scope of sets (with a depiction of banal worklife being the goal I think).

it looks like Reloaded expands the location pallette a little so it the set design might have some more to work with.

Regardless, I'm all about this Underworld flik and I don't even have a clue what it's about.

As a side note to tie this thread with the Batman thread, didn't Anton Furst also do art design for the Original Crow movie?

Anton Furst? Maybe his corpse did. Didn't he commit suicide shortly after that first Batman flick? I may be wrong.

R.

Hey puptent,

I don't think Proyas directed Underworld. I think he's currently filming I, Robot though.

Rick's right about Furst. I think he died in '90 or '91. Too bad, his was about the only decent contribution to the Batman film.

Edited by: J Schmo at: 5/8/03 5:32:12 pm

Hey Rick,

I love The Matrix as much as the next guy. I just think Dark City, not that it's without it's own influences, pushed the art form forward in regards to art direction, set design, cinematography and special effects; in turn laying the ground for films like The Matrix. Oh yeah, and it has Jennifer Connelly in it too. Unfortunately, I think Dark City was marketed poorly.

IMDB lists Underworld's writer and director as Len Wiseman.

It's his first film, but he's worked in the biz before - he was the assistant props guy on Independence Day!

If that ain't qualified, I don't know what is.
-C

www.cameron-stewart.com

gee....sorry bout that. I guess misread the earlier post as saying that Underworld was a Proyas film. Oops, I guess that's how fanboy site rumors start, huh?

Well.....good to hear he's got the other thing in the works. thanks for the info. I guess I can blindly dis on the underworld poster......and start sending in my resume for those prop jobs. ha.

As far as the Furst thing goes......I officially turn in my film geek badge, although I'm seeing a lot of comparisons in the blurbs about The Crow as I look around. Sooooo...I, Robot in '04.

The Crow-
prod. designer: Alex McDowell (also design on Minority Report, Fight Club, & Fear and Loathing in LV).
art direction: Simon Murton
set direction: Marthe Pineau/William Barclay

response about matrix

Postby jimmymcwicked » Thu May 08, 2003 4:18 pm

love/hatred for the matrix is a personal thing... i tend to dislike alternate/virtual reality genre for the same reason i find fault with time travel stuff - plots and motivations are suspect because there is always going to be holes in the plot - i feel no urgency because 'what is real?' or 'they can just go back in time again'... i am not smart, and i don't want to make any claim that i am - however, my mind tends to question glaring plot holes when i spot them to the degree that i cannot enjoy the story anymore. this is just me and my stunted thought process or lack of imagination - to each his own. no amount of slo-mo bullets or wire-fu can recapture my interest, and certainly sunglasses and trenchcoats haven't that power either... add this to my either dislike or indifference to the majority of the cast and, viola - we have 'the matrix', a movie jimmy doesn't like... my intention isn't to go against the popular vote - what people like or dislike has little bearing on my thinking. my opinon comes from myself - if it comes off as i'm trying to play devil's advocate or rile anyone up, that isn't my intention. i would tip my hat to 'strange days', 'dark city', 'existenze' or even 'johnny neumonic' as having more going for them...

Well...time travel's a different story. I'm a sucker for time travel stories although they are inherently flawed. My favorite time travel movie so far is 12 Monkeys in that although they try to change the past to create a better future, they aren't able to because of the very nature of time. We could talk all night long about this stuff, Jimmy. And it might be fun! Time travel's my favorite science fiction.

Funny that you say that about Existenz. I'm pretty sure I'd like it more than the Matrix had the production values been better. There's a certain cheapness to the filmmaking which couldn't suspend my disbelief, but I really liked the concept and story. Strange Days and Nemonic, however, I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire.

R.
