frazetta ripoff?

Postby gilbo » Sat Jan 16, 2010 1:59 pm

i was looking at http://www.startdrawing.org/ and noticed this
http://www.startdrawing.org/browse/article/dell-barras
the first pic looks similar to this frazetta pic
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/8431 ... ovaps9.jpg
except the frazetta signature in the smoke underneath the axe is missing in the Dell Barras copy

How blatant a ripoff can you get!

Even Mike Hoffman would be outraged.

If it really was a rip-off it wouldn't be so blatant, IMHO.

BTW, thanks for the URL, there's a lot of talented people on that website !

old frazetta wasn't averse to 'borrowing' the odd bit of this and that

No way. Frazetta didn't use photos or look at other people's art. He just collected cameras in between throwing baseballs 500 yards.

I agree with what t cypress is saying. If you were to look at the picture alone. I'm sure that he states clearly that it's a reproduction of that Frazetta. He's just showing that he has the talent to reproduce it. Which is not inconsiderable.

It's weird that i don't care what bits frazetta stole from other artists or that he used cameras and says he doesn't. He clearly creates something so extraordinary that it isn't an issue for me. The same with Bisley. *shrugs* Ok, I know I'm weird.

I think people are taking the late Mr. Frazetta out of context. He would use photographs for reference sometimes to get the right pose or to find the correct location for an arm or leg but didn't use them as a major cornerstone of his work. It is obvious that the bulk Frazetta's work comes right from his imagination as opposed to photos ...what he didn't do was COPY the photos to get a photorealistic look like Boris Valejo or Alex Ross. this is not to disparage Ross or Boris...it's simply a different approach.
