Hey all, I've been asked a couple of time to sell drawings of characters that aren't mine. I'm not comfortable with that so I've always said "no".

I want to have your opinion on this. How legit is it to sell original drawings (not prints) of copyrighted characters (Marvel, DC, etc...)?

For certain comic book artists it seems to be 90% of there income.

technically it's illegal, but 99% of the time it's perfectly safe. Even artists who work for big companies sell tons of commissioned artwork of copyrighted characters from publishers they work with long with others, and fill up their own self-published sketchbooks with them and nobody does anything about it

I've heard from lots of people that one-off original drawings aren't a problem to sell. It's reproduction runs (prints and sketchbooks) that get a little shady. But
it seems that publishers and copyright owners tend to not go after individual comics artists for this.

It's quite illegal. Nobody important seems to care, though. I wouldn't stress about it, unless you're not claiming your income.
