It's always a shame when someone dies so young...

...but...

...let's not all suddenly get maudlin and go on about how great or important he was, just because he's dead.

His passing is a terrible loss to his family and friends, but not to the comics' industry. I, for one, won't miss seeing his crappy art on the shelves every month.

You're right. Thank you, Euan...thank you...for pointing out, less than 24 hours after the fact, that the death of this guy is no loss to the artistic community. I'm sure we were all thinking it, but you had the guts to say it. Good show! Bravo, sir!

Yes, dying is horrible. And I'm not sure that this is the time and the place to discuss his merits as an artist but I can't say that I go around mourning every creative/artistic person that dies either. I know the guy had a kajillion fans and for them, it's a huge loss.

Sounds like the guy fought to the bitter end, too.

Okay,

Looking at what I said again, the use of the phrase "crappy art" in my first post was a tad insensitive, given the nature of the news.

I'm not going to edit it, because I'd rather people think I'm an ass who at least can admit it, than try and pretend I never said it in the first place.

I've never met, worked with or employed Michael Turner, so his passing isn't going to affect me emotionally, professionally or financially. The only effect I'll notice is a lack of his artwork where comics are sold - I didn't like his art when he was alive, and his being dead doesn't change that.

So, I'm apologizing for how I said something, but not for what I said. The sentiment still stands

If people want to call me tactless or insensitive, that's their prerogative. But I won't be a hypocrite.





Incidentally, the Board rule about "tact being the order of the day" is meant for member-to-member communication. If we all had to mind our Ps and Qs when discussing everything, then a good part of this section (and about 50% of the Movie section) would no longer exist.

Turner's artwork was not to my tastes but I heard countless stories of how friendly and generous he was, and how he would put exceptional effort into attending shows and treating fans well, despite suffering enormous pain and fatigue from his illness. There's definitely too few people like that in this business anyway, and it's a real shame that there's one less now.

Well, Witchblade was one of the first comics I bought, along with Gen 13 and such. I lost interest a few years back, but the news on Michael Turner's passing does sadden me, his stuff actually influenced me back in the days. RIP Mr. Turner.
